Chris Van Hollen was born in 1959 to parents serving in the U.S. Foreign Service in Pakistan. After a childhood moving throughout Pakistan, Turkey, India, and Sri Lanka, he went to high school in Massachusetts before attending Swarthmore and graduating with a B.A. in philosophy in 1983. After graduation, he earned a master of public policy from Harvard Kennedy School
