NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

In Puerto Rico, protesters held an all-night vigil today blocking a
contested Navy bombing range on Vieques Island with U.S. warships looming
offshore. Earlier reports had indicated that federal agents were planning
to evict them. …As President Clinton’s envoy prepared to start mediation,
Palestinian negotiators said today they wanted to limit U.S. involvement.
On the other hand, Israel said it would accept any role Washington seeks to
play in the deadlocked talks. This is a complete reversal of the two sides’
usual positions. …A compound that seemed like a promising new weapon in
the battle against cancer may face a clouded future following the
laboratory discovery that it kills human liver cells. …An estimated 3.5
million Time Warner cable customers were in their second day without ABC
programming today after missing the first celebrity edition of “Who Wants
to Be a Millionaire” in prime-time Monday night. Instead of Philbin, Time
Warner customers found a message saying, “Disney has taken ABC away from
you” on the channel that normally carries WABC-TV in New York.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Men’s lacrosse earns postseason berth

The men’s lacrosse team has been awarded the No. 2 seed in the ECAC
Division III Southern Championship. It is the first playoff appearance for
the Garnet since 1984, when they went all the way to the NCAA championship.
The team finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-5.

2) Lavallee named Player of the Week

Softball star Pam Lavallee ’03 was named Centennial Conference softball
Player of the Week Monday. Lavallee led the Garnet to three wins last week,
batting .500 (12-24). She had game-winning hits against Washington and
Haverford, and scored the game-winner in the upset at Gettysburg.

3) Ultimate update

Over the weekend, both the Men’s and Women’s Ultimate Frisbee teams won
sectionals, and have now qualified to move onto regionals. Last year the
men’s team went 0-5 at regionals – this year they went 6-0. The women’s
team also went undefeated, 7-0.

4) World sports roundup

Lenny Wilkens is planning on talking with Michael Jordan, director of
basketball operations for the Washington Wizards, about the head coaching
vacancy. Wilkens is the winningest coach in NBA history. …The
Philadelphia 76ers wrapped up their first round playoff series with
Charlotte, beating the Hornets 105-99 as Aaron McKie started for the
injured Eric Snow and scored 25 points with 11 assists. In the other game
last night, Milwaukee trounced Indiana 100-87 to force a deciding game 5.
…Cubs ace Kerry Wood will make his first start in over a year for Chicago
tonight against Houston. …The Red Wings avoided falling into a 3-0 hole
in their series against Colorado, beating the Avalanche 3-1 in game 3.
