NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

Vermont Gov. Howard Dean says he will sign the first-ever legislation to
grant gay and lesbian couples all the benefits of marriage. The measure
passed the state House on Tuesday by a 79-68 vote. The state Senate
approved the bill last week. …Vice President Al Gore said yesterday that
his primary goal is to reduce the national debt year by year, with the aim
of eliminating it completely by 2013. He also characterized himself as a
fiscal conservative. …The Dalai Lama’s supporters accuse China of
damaging Tibet’s environment through careless exploitation of oil, water
and timber resources. Water “is now severely polluted by chemical nuclear
and industrial waste,” said the 160-page study of the impact of 41 years
of Chinese rule in Tibet. …Workers stayed home, students skipped school
and businesses closed Tuesday as Cuban-Americans called a general strike
that shut down Little Havana but barely affected the rest of Miami. The
strikers were protesting federal agents’ seizure of 6-year-old Elian
Gonzalez Saturday. …Oil giant Royal Dutch/Shell Group has agreed to pay
a $2 million fine to the United Nations after a Russian oil tanker under
contract to the oil giant was deemed to be illegally smuggling Iraqi
oil…City councilors named a square after Prague’s literary son, Franz
Kafka, on Tuesday despite earlier objections from the district’s mayor who
said the move would have terrified the writer.

3) Corrections

In yesterday’s Gazette, we neglected to mention that Jon Temin ’00 has won
a Fulbright grant to spend next year in Ghana doing research related to
their election in December. In addition, we erroneously referred to last
year’s Falun Gong protest in Tiananmen Square in China as violent, when
the protest was in fact entirely nonviolent. We apologize for these
errors.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Women’s lax burns Bryn Mawr

The women’s lacrosse team defeated Bryn Mawr 20-5 yesterday. The team was
led by Katie Tarr with 6 goals, Mariam Levy and Julie Finnegan with 3
goals each, Erika Williams with 2 goals and 1 assist, and Natania Kremer
with 1 goal and 1 assist. The team is now 9-5 overall, 4-3 in the
Centennial Conference.

2) Men’s tennis blanks Haverford

The men’s tennis team shut out Haverford 7-0 yesterday. The team’s record
is now 7-6.

3) Softball splits doubleheader with Washington

The softball team lost the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader with
Washington 5-4, but won the nightcap 4-3 with a single from Pamela
Lavallee. Lavallee went 3 for 3 with a double and had 3 RBI, Deirdre
Downey went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, and Amy White went 2 for 3 with a
run. The team is now 3-20, 1-11.

4) Baseball loses heartbreaker to Ursinus

The baseball team lost another heartbreaker yesterday, falling 8-7 to
Ursinus. Swarthmore led 8-7 going into the ninth inning, but then Ursinus
got two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Scott Kushner went 3 for 5 with
two doubles and a home run, scored 3 runs, and had 2 RBIs. Carlo Fitti
went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs, and Josh Lindsey went 2 for 5 with two runs and
an RBI. The team’s record is now 6-18, 2-11.

6) World sports roundup

The San Jose Sharks stunned the NHL’s top team 3-1 Tuesday, eliminating
the St. Louis Blues with a gutsy Game 7 win. The Blues, who stayed alive
with wins in Games 5 and 6, became only second team in NHL history to
finish with the most regular-season points but not make it past the first
round of the playoffs. …Facing mounting criticism, Toronto Raptors coach
Butch Carter dropped his $5 million defamation lawsuit against forward
Marcus Camby of the New York Knicks. …Players and coaches around the
majors skipped games Tuesday night, joining a work stoppage by Miami’s
Cuban-American community to protest Elian Gonzalez’s removal from the home
of his relatives. …Denver Broncos cornerback Dale Carter on Tuesday was
suspended by the NFL for one year for violating the league’s
substance-abuse policy.
