1) World news roundup
Saying she has “no regrets,” Attorney General Janet Reno today defended the
federal raid that reunited 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez with his father. Armed
federal agents broke into the Miami home of the boy’s relatives early
Saturday morning only after negotiations with the family there produced
mixed signals, Reno said. “We were told we would have a deal if we did
certain things and we did it and it evaporated.” …Seven people went on
trial in Yugoslavia on charges of plotting to assassinate President
Slobodan Milosevic and others. …The space shuttle Atlantis was fueled
today for liftoff on a mission to repair and restock the international
space station. …In a media crackdown that appears part of a bigger plan
to weaken reformist President Mohammad Khatami, Iranian hard-liners closed
down 12 pro-democracy newspapers, leaving only five in print today. … A
small plane carrying six passengers slammed into a mountian in southern New
Zealand Sunday, killing all aboard. …A man has been charged in the brutal
rape of a 91-year-old woman, a crime that caused police to conduct DNA
tests on almost every male in the small Australian town of Wee Waa. …The
Justice Department is leaning toward asking a federal judge to split up
Microsoft into two or three separate companies, according to published
reports.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Women’s rugby finishes season undefeated
The women’s rugby team ended their undefeated season Saturday when they
defeated Princeton, ranked second in the nation, 11-8. Meredith Hegg ’00
scored the try and Sarah Nusser ’02 hit two penalty kicks to clinch the win
in a well-attended home contest.

2) Kaufman sets CC record
The men’s golf team finished 6th out of seven teams at the Centennial
Conference championships down in Maryland this weekend with a team total of
717, the team’s highest ever finish. Matt Kaufman ’01 fired a first round
71, a conference record for a one-day score. He followed that up with an 85
Saturday for a 156 total, good for 4th place overall and All-Conference
honors, the first Swat golfer to accomplish the feat. Also scoring for the
Garnet were James Dolan ’02, who shot 170 for 22nd place, Ben Wiles, who
shot 189 for 29th place, and Nick Loiacano ’03, who rounded out the scoring
with a 202.

3) Men’s lacrosse gets hammered
Gettysburg, ranked 2nd in the nation, was just too much for the Garnet, as
they fell 23-7. Patrick Friel ’03 led the sway with three goals, while John
Murphy ’03 added two. Mark Dingfield ’01 and Marcus Shin ’00 each added a
goal as the team’s record falls to 7-5, 1-4.

4) Baseball drops doubleheader
The baseball team dropped two to Dickinson over the weekend, losing the
first game 12-2 and falling 7-6 in a heartbreaking nightcap. Josh Lindsey
’01 went 4-4 in the first game and 2-4 in the second. Doug Kneeland ’02 hit
a pinch-hit triple in the nightcap and Carlo Fitti ’00 went 2-3. The team’s
record is now 6-15, 2-8.

5) Softball falls twice
The softball team dropped a doubleheader to Franklin & Marshall, 9-2 and
9-1. Amy White ’00 went 4-6 on the day. The team’s record is now 2-17, 0-8.

6) World sports roundup
In his first career playoff game, Toronto’s Vince Carter had the worst
shooting day of his young career, going 3-20 from the field and not hitting
his first shot until early in the fourth quarter. The Knicks won the game
92-88. …Shaquille O’Neal dominated inside, scoring 46 points and pulling
down 17rebounds as the Lakers took a 1-0 lead in their series against
Sacramento, winning 117-107. …On the ice, the Blues forced a game 7 in
St. Louis by defeating San Jose 6-2, as Scott Young scored three goals.
…Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, 53, had successful emergency
double-bypass surgery Sunday to clear an artery blockage. He is in stable
condition. …Hal Sutton shot a final round 71 to hold on and win the
Greater Greensboro Classic by three shots over Andrew Magee. …Bernie
Williams and Jorge Posada both homered from both sides of the plate in the
Yankees’ 10-7 win over Toronto. It is believed to be the first time in
major league history that two players from the same team accomplished the
feat on the same day.
