Zagette, Book Exchange Go Live

Over winter break, the Daily Gazette developed a new reviews site for local restaurants, shops, and other businesses.

We launched the site with thirty reviews pulled from the Gazette’s archives, but the Zagette is designed to grow through user submissions—-any Gazette reader can submit and review new restaurants and businesses.

We hope you find it fulfilling to share your opinions with others, but to sweeten the deal even more, the Gazette will be offering $100 in prizes for reviews: the author of the best review will win $50, and the most prolific reviewer will receive another $50. The awards will be handed out at the end of February.

As of writing, the most highly lauded restaurant is Philadelphia’s Brasserie Perrier. “I received some of the best service I’ve had,” noted reviewer Mark Kharas ’08. For area restaurants like Brasserie Perrier, the Zagette will automatically find the nearest R3 station and give turn-by-turn walking directions.

We’re also happy to announce our new book exchange. Sponsored by Student Council, this site provides an easy-to-access place for students to post textbooks for sale. Sellers will probably get more money than the bookstore would pay, and buyers will pay less than they would have to elsewhere.

This part of the site, being brand new, doesn’t have a whole lot of books listed yet. Post your own, and check back often. They’ll also show up in tomorrow’s Reserved Students Digest.

  1. How do we remove books from the listing?
    Also, when we put "more info" about the book why doesn't it show up on the listing?

  2. When you're logged in, there should be a link in the book's row that says "mark as sold." Not super-intuitive, I know — we'll probably pull out your own entries in some way.

    There will be (sometime in the very near future) a per-book page, which will include the "more info" bit. This will also allow you to edit your own entries, in case you made a typo or want to change the price or something.

  3. This is a great idea, and I applaud the Gazette for creating it. Unfortunately, there are no clear guidelines as to price. Are we to use the regulatr Zagat scale (which is clearly to high for Swat Students)? If a new scale were to be instituted, I would recommend
    $ = up to $10
    $$ = up to $25
    $$$ = up to $35
    $$$$ = up to $45
    $$$$$ = above.
