Today at Student Council, discussion focused around the role of Swarthmore’s yearbook, the Halcyon, for the student body. According to Student Groups Advisor Paul Apollo, the yearbook received “a total of $51,903.32” out of $469,756 allocated by SBC at the beginning of the year– nearly one out of every nine dollars.
With this in mind, Council members discussed whether the publication had enough student support for that kind of monetary commitment from the Student Activities Fee, currently $320 per student. Members discussed the possibility of seeking alternate sources for full or partial funding, which might include Development or the Alumni Office, since a yearbook is something that most students appreciate after graduation.
Council also discussed the possibility of only giving the Halcyon to seniors, which could reduce costs. To this, Apollo said that he was under the impression that the yearbook had just re-negotiated a multiple-year contract with Jostens to print a certain number of books which “we can only break out of for a fine.” The option of seeking funding elsewhere is still viable.
Also coming up–Sharples “Amnesty Week,” a time when you can bring back some of the approximately $8,000 worth of silverware that you steal per year. Remember, the first step to getting better food at Sharples– cage-free eggs? soft-serve ice cream?– is not stealing things!
Council has decided that the theme for the next Board of Managers luncheon will be students involved in Chester in various capacities.
With course registration coming up, remember that the Blackboard “Swarthmore Course Syllabi” folder already has a good number of syllabi and is still gathering more–encourage your professors to submit theirs to syllabi [at] swarthmore [dot] edu! Getting the Class Rec Book up and running is also on Council’s agenda this week.
Remember to apply for committees now and stay tuned for Student Council Elections… the positions of Student Events Advisor, the Vice President, the Appointments Chair, the Secretary and the Campus Life Representative are all up for re-election.
