What’s your take on Screw? Are you getting set up? Have you done it before?
Sarah Sonntag ’27: I have done it before. I think it’s cute. I think you should do it once, but I wouldn’t do it again.
Oci White ’26: I think it’s cute. I think there’s too much emphasis on it being romantic. I think it’s better as a way to make new friends.
Nora Larson ’26: Love it. Super cute. Support. Never done it. This week is not the week, but my past “baefianas” who represented me, my girls, I’m proud of them.
Ethan Pang ’27: Screw? I mean it’s fun, if you’re trying to have fun. It’s not going to work out.
Abby Guise ’26: I think Screw is a really fun tradition. I have not done Screw, will not be doing Screw — I’ve been in a relationship for three years. I do think it’s fun to watch. I like seeing the costumes people come up with.
Mateo Lujan ’29: I just found out about Screw. I’m going to do it — it’s not that interesting, though, it’s just a friend.
Robert Bonner ’26: I think it’s great that it’s still a Swat tradition. I haven’t done it just because every time someone has tried to set me up, there’s been too much flakiness involved. Too many Swarthmore students are busy going through the motions, so it can be difficult to set time aside for it. Some people have wanted to set me up … but it’s been tricky.
André Garcia ’28: I’m sort of indifferent, mostly because I haven’t participated. I think it’s fun though, so I’m probably going to go just to look at people, even though I’m not participating.
If you could climb any tree on campus, which one would you choose?
Sarah Sonntag ’27: There’s, like, cherry trees around campus. Maybe the cherry trees in Wharton courtyard.
Oci White ’26: Whatever the highest tree on campus that has a thick enough branch high up that I could sit on, Katniss Everdeen style, and sleep up there.
Nora Larson ’26: If I could climb any tree, it would be the one near the track. It’s ginormous, and it’s like the one big lit up tree when you’re sitting at NPPR.
Ethan Pang ’27: Any one that’s sturdy. I guess the tallest one, I want the best view.
Abby Guise ’26: I would climb the big tree outside Wharton, in the courtyard.
Mateo Lujan ’29: A small one.
Robert Bonner ’26: I don’t know if the tree exists anymore but there’s a tree outside Martin, behind Sci. Because I remember it. But I don’t know if it’s here anymore.
André Garcia ’28: Any of the trees along that path by LPAC and Kohlberg.
If you had to get rid of one sports team at Swat, which would it be?
Sarah Sonntag ’27: The volleyball team! Free my girls!
Oci White ’26: Men’s golf. Until there’s a women’s golf team.
Nora Larson ’26: Volleyball.
Ethan Pang ’27: I don’t know any.
Abby Guise ’26: I’d say, and no offense to the team, but I don’t really know the badminton team very well so, if I have to choose, I’d choose them.
Mateo Lujan ’29: Well, lacrosse, I guess. No reason though, just said one sport that came to mind.
Robert Bonner ’26: That’s interesting. I think the easy answer would be lacrosse, but I don’t actually see them that much. The sports team that gets on my nerves the most would probably be swimming just because I have to see them a lot and they take up a lot of space in the dining hall. So it would probably have to be swimming, but out of respect.
André Garcia ’28: This is sort of a running joke in my group, so I’d say fencing. We don’t think it’s a real sport. And I also tried fencing my freshman year and I lasted like two weeks. [Rafi: And you still say it’s not a real sport?] It’s not real in the sense that I don’t want it to be real.
Who’s your campus celebrity?
Sarah Sonntag ’27: Lowkey [Provost and Dean of Faculty] Rich [Wicentowski]
Oci White ’26: He graduated. But Avishai Greenberg [’25].
Nora Larson ’26: Jillian Provaznik ’26 is my campus celebrity.
Ethan Pang ’27: William Jin ’27. Or the Swarthmore On guy [Avishai Greenberg ’25]. Or that guy who walks around, [Edmund Allen Professor of Chemistry] Paul Rablen.
Abby Guise ’26: My campus celebrity was a person in a class I took last semester, and I can’t say too much more because I don’t want them to know who they are. I would say that they had a very dimensional personality … I don’t think they know my name.
Mateo Lujan ’29: I don’t think I have a single campus celebrity — there are just too many unique people on campus. There are a lot of noticeable people, they all stand out.
Robert Bonner ’26: I would say I’ve had many campus celebrities in the past, but, in order to remain one, you have to be kept at a distance. As soon as you get to know them they cease to be a celebrity. My current campus celebrities are people I don’t know or don’t have classes with but they just have a very strange, interesting vibe. They always add something to my day, they’re always a staple of my Swarthmore experience.
André Garcia ’28: It’s not a student. So, I take the ML shuttle every night and there’s this driver, Cathy, she’s iconic. I love her hair, too.
