Field Hockey
Swarthmore 8, Sewanee College 1
On Saturday afternoon, Swarthmore field hockey cruised past Sewanee College to take an 8-1 win. Seven different players found goals in the back of Sewanee’s cage, the first in the fifth minute of the game. In the 46th minute, the Tigers scored, ending a Garnet shutout. Swarthmore quickly responded with two goals, finishing the match with eight total goals scored.
Notable Players: Katherine Kohn ’25 led the Garnet in points (four), tallying two goals. Sophia Hitchingham ’25 made seven shot attempts.
Swarthmore 0, Messiah University 4
On Wednesday night, field hockey fell to Messiah University 4-0. Swarthmore fought hard, putting up four shots and accruing five corners. Unfortunately, the Garnet just could not hold off Messiah, with each of their four shots finding the back of Swarthmore’s cage.
Notable Players: Katherine Kohn ’25 had the Garnet’s lone shot on goal.
Women’s Soccer
Swarthmore 1, Gettysburg College 0
After a three-hour long bus ride, Swarthmore women’s soccer laced up their cleats to face their first conference matchup against Gettysburg College. The Garnet pressed high early on, taking their first shot in the ninth minute. Dominating the shot counter 12-0, Swarthmore’s winning goal came in the 63rd minute. Swarthmore held its 1-0 lead, taking home its first conference game.
Notable Players: Ava Gizzie ’27 scored the winning goal, rallying the Garnet with five shots. Emme Hansard ’25 successfully defended 1v1 battles against pacey forwards throughout the game.
Swarthmore 4, Muhlenberg College 1
At Muhlenberg’s home field, Swarthmore defeated the Mules 4-1. The Garnet had 33 shots overall and kept Muhlenberg to just nine. Four different players found the back of the net — three of whom made their first goal of the season.
Notable Players: Macie Mangini ’26 had a goal and an assist. Aminah Evans ’28 and Charlotte Carleton ’27 both scored once. Celia Kanellakos ’28 had an assist to a goal by Ava Gizzie ’27.
Volleyball
Swarthmore 3, SUNY New Paltz 0
This past Friday evening, Swarthmore Volleyball beat SUNY New Paltz 3-0 at Union, New Jersey. After a tense battle for the first set win, the Garnet came out victorious, 25-16. Using their newfound momentum, Swarthmore won the two next sets, finishing strong with five kills in the last set.
Notable Players: Alexia Enache ’27 had a field day, leading the match with 13 kills. Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week Melissa Eyer ’28 finished with thirteen digs. Emily Sun ’27 had fourteen assists.
Swarthmore 3, Kean University 0
After trading leads throughout the first set, Swarthmore finally secured an 18-3 lead against Kean. After nearly being overtaken by the Cougars, the score lay 22-21. Finally, Swarthmore scored three consecutive points to take the first set. The second set started similarly to the first, until the Garnet suddenly dominated with nine consecutive points to win 21-14. Swarthmore hit the nail in the Kean coffin, winning the third and last set to take the game.
Notable Players: Melissa Eyer ’28 led the Garnet with eighteen digs. Alexia Enache ’27 had twelve kills and Emily Sun ’27 made a whopping twenty assists.
Women’s Cross Country
At the Main Line Invitational 5k, Swarthmore women’s cross country finished fourth and saw multiple runners recording personal bests. The Garnet beat two Division II and three Division III teams, with three runners placing in the top twenty.
Notable Runners: Olivia Montini ’26 (18:53.1) and Elizabeth Page ’28 (18:55.1) ran career-high times and took sixteenth and seventeenth place, respectively.
Men’s Cross Country
On the four-mile Haverford College course, the Garnet placed fourth in the Main Line Invitational. That Friday, multiple Swarthmore runners ran person-best times, with Cohen Manges ’27 beating Division I opponents.
Notable Runners: Cohen Manges ’27 finished eighth with a personal best of 20:22:7. Kenneth Relovsky ’27 had a career best time of 20:46:1, finishing in nineteenth place.
Men’s Soccer
Swarthmore 2, Gettysburg College 1
The undefeated #13 Garnet beat the Gettysburg Bullets 2-1 this past Saturday, opening their conference play with a win. Swarthmore opened with the first shot of the game in the thirteenth minute, but were outshot and outplayed on corner kicks by the end of the first half, which ended 0-0. However, less than ten minutes into the second half, the Garnet found the back of the net. Swarthmore then scored again, 2-0. Gettysburg found a goal in the 80th minute, and the game ended 2-1.
Notable Players: Tejas Sarna ’25 and Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week Len Yanabe ’27 each scored a goal. Christian Bignotti ’25 made five saves.
