Last weekend, the Warmothers, Swarthmore’s Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Team, competed in the 2013 Division II College Ultimate Championships in Milwaukee, WI. The team was not originally slated to go to Nationals, as the bid to Nationals for their region (Ohio Valley) had been won by Oberlin College. However, because other teams turned down their invitations, the Warmothers were given a spot. Seeded at 15th place at the beginning of the tournament, the Warmothers broke seed by 10 places, coming in 5th overall.
The tournament began on Saturday with two loses by the Warmothers to Claremont College and Carelton-Eclipse College, two of the best teams at the tournament. After a bye during which the team cheered on Philadelphia University, another surprise invitee, the Warmothers went on to win against Bentley University (14-4) and SUNY- Oneonta (14-11).
On Sunday the team played the first seed of the tournament, Valparaiso University. They scored 6 points during the hard-fought game but ultimately fell to Valparaiso (15-6). For the 5th place match-up the Warmothers found out they were going to play Carelton-Eclipse again after the team had been defeated by Williams College. Each team scored points during the first half but just after halftime the Warmothers were able to pull away, winning the game (12-6). The Warmothers tied with Philadelphia University for 5th place overall.
