Behind a pair of well-struck second half goals, the Swarthmore women’s soccer team evened its record at 2-2 with a 2-1 victory over Marywood.
After dominated the Widener Pride in its previous match on Tuesday, the Garnet controlled both ends of play outshooting the Pacers 21-5 for the match.
But despite an 11-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes, the teams went into the second half scoreless. It would take all of 21 seconds for the Garnet to open the scoring in the second.
Immediately off the second half kick, the Garnet moved the ball to the left wing and in on a breakaway behind the Marywood defense. Passanante ’14 rang a shot off the post but followed her miss and collected the rebound, putting it behind second-half keeper Emily Osborne.
The Garnet lead lasted for all of two minutes and 41 seconds. Off a throw-in deep in Swarthmore territory, Siobhan Blancaflor found a loose ball just on the edge of the six-yard box and buried it behind Marie Mutryn ’12 to level the match.
From that point onward, Swarthmore outshot Marywood 8-2 and it was only a matter of time before, in the 66th minute, the Garnet broke through for the winner. Two freshmen, Emma Sindelar and Amy DiPierro, who each scored on Tuesday against Widener, collaboarated for the game-winner. DiPerro had a quick feed for Sindelar, who was composed in her finish for her first career game-winner.
All five of Swarthmore’s goals on the season have been scored by freshmen and sophomores.
A committed and balanced Garnet attack saw 11 different players register a shot. Brock ’14 led the team with five, two on goal. Each of Sindelar’s three efforts were on target.
The Garnet returns to play on Sunday afternoon to take on the host University of Scranton which defeated Lebanon Valley 3-2 on Saturday.
