Greetings, Swatties. It only appears that it will be a bleak weekend. Despite the cold and rain tonight and tomorrow night, and recognizing that the date is Friday the 13th, there are some fun things happening on and off campus that may keep your spirits alive.
On campus tonight are three major shows that you should not miss. Starting off the evening is the fall concert of Mixed Company, a Swat a cappella group, accompanied by the Georgetown Capitol G’s. They will perform new and old arrangements in Lang Concert Hall from 7:30 – 8:30PM. Next up is Swat’s sketch comedy group Boy Meets Tractor, and they will perform in Science Center 101 tonight from 9:00 – 10:30PM. And finally, in Olde Club tonight from 10:00PM – 2:00AM, hip hop group Diamond District (XO, Oddissee, and YU joined by DJ Quatermane) presents street savvy, grimy beats, and politically conscious lyrics about what it means to be a black male growing up in the DC metropolitan area. Also today, the Kitao Gallery opens its newest show featuring their latest creative experiment. The show, entitled “miniatures,” showcases small pieces no bigger than 4”x4”x4”. All submissions are student created. The opening will take place from 5:00 – 7:00PM tonight, and Kitao will be open from 4:00 – 6:00PM Saturday – Monday.
Tomorrow night, one of the campus’s most anticipated events will take place: the Rhythm ‘N Motion fall dance concert. RnM features several dance styles, and this concert incorporates everything from flamenco to stomp to African to hip hop. It promises to be a high-energy and exciting show you don’t want to miss. It’ll happen on the LPAC Mainstage from 8:30 – 10:00PM.
Sunday, 2009 Grammy Award winner Hila Plitmann joins James Freeman and Orchestra 2001 for concerts of music on texts by two poets: Sappho and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. This concert is a Cooper Event, and it will take place in Lang Concert Hall from 7:30 – 9:30PM on Sunday.
Philly is showcasing its own fun too. This weekend, you can see Philadanco at the Kimmel Center. Blending African-American-based dance with ballet, jazz, and modern, Philadanco has been lauded by the likes of Dance, New York Magazine, the New York Times, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. They will be performing at 2:30PM and 7:30PM tonight through Sunday night, and tickets can be purchased for $35 – $46. Three amazing saxophonists will play in the ballroom of the Powel House for an intimate evening of musical creativity. John Butcher, Hans Koch, and Jack Wright are all accomplished and trailblazing saxophonists. Butcher is famous for his manipulation of multiphonics, Koch is known for his use of electronic technology in his playing, and Wright is one of the remaining few saxophonists who has been playing exclusively improvised music since the 1970s. This performance will showcase the unique sounds they’ve developed over their careers. The show will take place tonight at 8:00PM, and tickets are $12 general and $8 advance.
