This weekend it would be remiss of me not to mention the opening of “Pop Out” in the Frear Ensemble Theater and “Written in the Stars” on LPAC Mainstage. For those who want to go into the city, there are a few other shows to consider.
“Hairspray” is still running at the Walnut Street Theater and fans of NBC’s “The Office” might want to attend Helium Comedy Club where Craig Robinson (who portrays Darryl) will be doing a standup routine.
Beethoven fans won’t be disappointed this weekend. The Perelman Theater’s Chamber Music Concert will include his “Ghost” Piano Trio No. 4 on Sunday while tonight they will be showcasing Vox Ama Deus’ performance of Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis.” If that’s not enough, the Philadelphia Orchestra is playing a program of Beethoven and Wagner in the Kimmel Center through Saturday night.
Finally, the Academy of Music is running Rossini’s opera “L’italiana in Algeri” this weekend and next. The comic adventure is set on the coast of Algiers and pits the wily Isabella against the Bey of Algiers, who happens to be the master of her lover, the slave Lindoro, and in search of an Italian lady to add to his harem. The glittering Mediterranean set design alone should be enticement to watch this production by the Opera Company of Philadelphia.
