This weekend, the last in February, brings a few more hours to procrastinators who need to screw their roommates and snowfall to those who had forgotten it was still winter. It also brings a packed schedule from Screw Your Roommate and Margaret Cho to cultural celebrations in the city.
Saturday is the true marathon evening, beginning with Screw Your Roommate in Sharples at dinnertime, followed by comedian Margaret Cho’s performance in LPAC at 7. For more laughs, the annual Vertigo-go Screw Show will start at 9:30 in Sci 101. For dancing, the Oasis-themed Screw Formal in Upper Tarble begins at 10.
For those hoping to take it easy in anticipation of tomorrow, consider stopping by the Rose Tattoo Café in Olde Club at 9 to hear fellow Swatties performing an eclectic mix of music. Also this evening, the Movie Committee will be showing “Into the Wild” at 7 in Sci 199. The film, up for an Oscar for editing, follows the true story of a college grad who hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. Those interested in following up on the film’s success can watch the Academy Awards in Tarble at 7 on Sunday.
If the thought of hitchhiking to Alaska has you inspired, why not satisfy your inner travel bug with a little culture shock in Philadelphia? Craving sunshine: stop at World Café Live, hosting the popular Alo Brasil, who will be performing Brazilian carnival music. Meanwhile, Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist, feminist, and revolutionary, has more or less taken over the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
For those who prefer loftier destinations, the Kimmel Center this weekend is featuring an “Alpine Symphony” program including work by Mozart and Strauss that promises to be nothing if not elevating. Or if you’re craving a taste of Asia, watch the Dragon Parade in Chinatown on Sunday and grab dim sum at HK Golden Phoenix. To all of your adventures: bon voyage!
