Student Council 411

Editor’s note: This article was initially published in The Daily Gazette, Swarthmore’s online, daily newspaper founded in Fall 1996. As of Fall 2018, the DG has merged with The Phoenix. See the about page to read more about the DG.

Interested in appearing in this space next semester? Student Council will be hosting a “Meet and Greet” on Tuesday the 20th from 7-9 in Parrish Parlors and then 9-10 in the Intercultural Center, and platforms and declarations of intent are due on Monday the 26th.

In related news, Appointments received over 100 applications for the last round, a “successful” result. Students who applied can look forward to interviews soon.

A Sharples takeover is promised for November 29th–it will be “better than your average Sharples meal,” and will kick-off an amnesty week for returning stolen plates and silverware, which cost Dining Services approximately $8,000 a year.

Parking Committee has assumed a new and hopefully superior form, and will encompass more than just the parking process. The committee will now be made up of Kelly Wilcox, 4-6 RAs appointed by Myrt Westphal, and 4 students appointed through the appointments process. It will still be in charge of giving out parking permits, but will also discuss larger issues such as “How much should tickets be?” and “What can we do about the fact that there’s not enough parking?”

On the heels of the successful budget discussion, Council will be organizing a Financial Aid discussion for early in the spring semester.

Council is also considering a petition to get lockers on campus started by students who live in ML–potentially good for backs as well as crime reduction.

Lastly, for the upcoming Board of Managers meeting, the theme will be students engaged in research across the disciplines. The spring theme will be students involved in Chester.
