Starting this weekend, the Mullan Center will be open for an extra two
hours each Saturday and Sunday, closing at 7:45 p.m. instead of 5:45.
The idea had been under discussion at Student Council meetings last
semester, but was not implemented until now.

According to Joe Alberti ’06, a student employee at the Mullan Center,
hours are being extended on a trial basis for the fall semester. If a
sufficient number of students use the gym during the extended hours, a
permanent extension will be considered.

In addition to the extended hours, the Mullan Center has added four new
Pre-Cor Ellipticals to its collection of workout equipment this fall.
Sponsored by the President’s Office, at roughly $5,500 each, the
machines will nicely complement the equipment already available at the
center.

* Hurricane Ivan is expected to make landfall late Wednesday night. The
category 4 hurricane, which has already devastated several islands in
the Caribbean, is now headed to the Gulf Coast regions of Alabama,
Louisiana and Florida. Residents have already started to flee the area
in advance of the storm, with large amounts of flooding expected.

* Martha Stewart asked on Wednesday to be allowed to start her jail
sentence as soon as possible. Instead of waiting to see if an appeals
court would overturn the guilty verdict she received last year, she
will enter jail immediately to begin her five-month sentence. In a
statement, Ms. Stewart said that she was sorry to have to miss the
upcoming holiday season, but she felt this decision was the best for
herself, her family, and her company.

* About 40 house Republicans issued a letter today asking that CBS news
retract a report from last week. The CBS report made the accusation
that President George W. Bush had been suspended from flying with the
Texas Air National Guard due to his failure to both meet standards and
to show up for a physical. CBS also suggested that the Guard may have
felt pressured to show favoritism to Bush, whose father had been a
Congressman at the time. On Wednesday, CBS said it was looking into the
accusations raised by the House Republicans.

SPORTS UPDATE

The Swarthmore women’s soccer team was defeated by Richard Stockton on
Wednesday afternoon by a score of 5-0.  The loss dropped the
Garnet Tide to 2-4 on the season.  Swarthmore fell behind early,
with the Ospreys’ first goal coming 1:51 into the match.  By
halftime, it was 4-0, but Swarthmore held their ground in the second
half.  Rachel Jordan ’08 entered the game at goalkeeper and turned
away 6 Stockton shots while allowing only one goal.  For the game,
the Ospreys, who were recently ranked 8th in the Mid-Atlantic region,
outshot the Garnet by a margin of 19-3.  The team next returns to
the field on Saturday at noon, when they travel to Franklin and
Marshall for their first Centennial Conference match of the season.
