NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

* US government offices in Calcutta were the site of a bloody
rampage
yesterday when unidentified gunmen began shooting at the site,
killing four
Indian policemen in the process. In response to the attacks,
which left an
additional 20 people injured, security was tightened around
the area of the
violence and across American sites in India. No group has
claimed
responsibility for the assault, the first targeted at an official
US complex
in the country.

* Guantanamo Bay Naval Base received 14 more prisoners from
Afghanistan
Monday, bringing the total being held in Cuba to 158. Meanwhile,
the US
government continued to face sharp criticism from its European
allies for
the treatment of the detainees. The Dutch government assailed
American
leaders for violating the rights of the prisoners under the
Geneva
Convention, while US officials maintain that the al-Qaida
and Taliban
fighters are “unlawful combatants,” and therefore,
are not guaranteed the
protections afforded prisoners of war. Other qualms were raised
about the
conditions of the detainment camp, where temperatures have
climbed over 90
degrees in recent days.

* Israeli tanks rolled into the West Bank town of Nablus
yesterday, the
second Palestinian enclave captured by Israel’s forces in
as many days. The
invasion comes in response to a Palestinian attack on the
northern Israeli
city of Hadera last week, which left six Israelis dead. Despite
the
assault, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat pledged to not back
down and
remained steadfast in his commitment to the creation of a
Palestinian state.

2) Campus Events

2) World sports roundup

* The New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, and Colorado Rockies
completed an
11-player trade last night. The Mets acquired Jeromy Burnitz,
Jeff D’Amico,
Lou Collier, and Mark Sweeney from Milwaukee in return for
Glendon Rusch
and Lenny Harris. The Mets also traded Todd Zeile and Benny
Agbayani to
Colorado in return for minor leaguers Ross Gloan and Craig
House, and the
Brewers acquired Alex Ochoa from Colorado as well. The deal
is the largest
transaction since 1994, when the Houston Astros and San Diego
Padres
completed a 12-player trade.

* Martina Hingis advanced to the women’s semifinals yesterday
at the
Australian Open by defeating Adriana Serra Zanetti 6-2, 6-3.
Hingis will
face the winner of the Monica Seles v. Venus Williams quarterfinal
match. On
the men’s side, Marat Safin defeated Pete Sampras 6-2, 6-4,
7-6 in a
grueling 3 hour, 33 minute match. Safin will face Wayne Ferreira
of South
Africa in the quarterfinals. Sampras is now winless in his
last 21 events.

* Duke University’s men’s basketball team remained No. 1
in the country
after receiving all 72 first-place votes in the AP’s college
basketball
poll. The Blue Devils’ record stands at 16-1. Kansas (15-2)
claimed the No.
2 spot, while Maryland (14-3) remained No. 3. Cincinnati,
Florida, Oklahoma,
Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Arizona filled out the remainder
of the
