NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

* Two Marines were killed yesterday and five were wounded
when their
helicopter crashed into the rugged terrain of northern Afghanistan.
The
crash, which left two of the survivors in critical condition,
was blamed on
mechanical failure. In other news out of the region, the US,
Japan, Saudi
Arabia, Britain and Germany agreed to provide the new Afghani
regime with
$1.58 billion in aid as it attempts to rebuild the war-torn
country.

* Secretary of State Colin Powell told the press Sunday that
the alleged
bugging of Chinese President Jiang Zemin’s aircraft would
not lead to
deterioration of Sino-American relations. President Bush still
plans to
travel to China next month while investigations continue into
the source of
the 27 bugs aboard the American-made Boeing 767. While blame
was initially
directed at the US, the time elapsed between the discovery
of the bugs in
October and the publicizing of the incident on Saturday suggests
that the
culprits may hail from within China.

* At the Golden Globe Awards last night, “A Beautiful
Mind” and “Moulin
Rouge” took home Best Picture honors, while Robert Altman
claimed Best
Director for “Gosford Park.” In the acting categories,
Russell Crowe and
Sissy Spacek won for Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama, while
Gene Hackman
and Nicole Kidman won for Musical/Comedy. Jim Broadbent and
Jennifer
Connelly claimed the supporting awards. Top TV honors went
to “Six Feet
Under” for Best Dramatic Series and “Sex in the
City” for Best Comedy
Series. Kiefer Sutherland and Jennifer Garner won Best Actor
and Actress in
a Drama Series, while Charlie Sheen and Sarah Jessica Parker
took the
statues for acting in a Comedy Series.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Women’s basketball claims first place;
Kile sets new school record for
scoring

On Saturday, the women’s basketball team hosted Muhlenberg.
Going into the
conference, Muhlenberg was tied with Swarthmore for first
place in the
eastern division of the Centennial Conference, with each team
having a
record of 5-0 in conference action. At the end of the game,
however, the
Garnet was in first place all by themselves after defeating
the Mules
65-53. Katie Robinson ’04 led the Swarthmore scoring with
a career-high 30
points and 13 rebounds. She also recorded five steals.

Heather Kyle ’02 scored 18 points and made 15 rebounds in
the win, and in
addition to helping put her team in first place, she also
made history. Her
17 points brought her to a career total of 1744, which surpasses
the school
record for career points scored set in 1986 by Michelle Fowler.
The team’s
record now stands at 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference.
Their next
game will take place on Wednesday night against arch-rival
Haverford.

2) Men’s basketball falls to Muhlenberg

Also on Saturday, the men’s basketball team faced Muhlenberg
but did not
fare quite as well as the women, dropping the contest 63-47.
Matt
Gufstafson ’05 led the Garnet in scoring with 14 points. The
loss brings
the team’s record to 4-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

3) World sports roundup

* The Conference matchups in the NFL playoffs are set as
the Rams crushed
the Packers Sunday, 45-17, while the Steelers finished off
the
defending-champion Ravens, 27-10. In the NFC contest, Brett
Favre threw six
interceptions, three of which were returned for touchdowns
as St. Louis
moves on to face the Eagles next weekend. Over in the AFC,
Baltimore’s
dreams of a repeat were dashed as Elvis Grbac was picked off
three times,
sending Pittsburgh to a showdown with the Patriots next Sunday.

* Following the disputed instant replay reversal in Saturday’s
Oakland-New
England game, the NFL will review the definition of a fumble
and incomplete
pass after the season ends. In that contest, an apparent fumble
by Patriots
QB Tom Brady was overruled since it appeared that the ball
was knocked out
of his hands at the very end of a forward passing motion.
The league’s
rules currently state that a fumble cannot occur until the
ball has been
tucked away following the forward motion.

* The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators in overtime
last
night, 3-2. Mathieu Dandenault scored the game-winner 59 seconds
into the
extra period off an assist from Steve Yzerman. It was the
1,000th assist of
the NHL legend’s career – he is the ninth player to reach
this plateau.
