NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori called for a new election and paved the way for his exit from power, after being dragged down by a recent bribery scandal.

A senior Palestinian negotiator backtracked on a major concession made during the U.S.-brokered Camp David talks, and said his side is no longer willing to discuss ceding some West Bank territory to Israel.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its astronauts pulled away from the international space station late Sunday after a short but productive stay. They completely restocked the station with necessities in preparation for the upcoming arrival of Expedition One – the first permanent space station crew – which is expected to blast off Oct. 30 for a four month mission.

Army officials recommended an honorable discharge for Reserve Lt. Steve May, an openly gay Arizona lawmaker who violated the Army’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy by acknowledging his sexuality during a legislative debate, officials said.

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Field hockey falls in finals

After a strong run over the weekend, the Garnet field hockey team fell to Wellesley 3-2 in the championship game of the Seven Sisters Tournament. Katie Tarr ’02 scored both goals off assists from Katie Vivalo ’01 and Ingrid Caszas ’03. On Saturday, they defeated Mount Holyoke 3-2 and Haverford 4-1 to advance to the finals. Meg Woodworth ’03 scored two goals vs. Mount Holyoke and Kim Cariello ’02 scored two vs. Haverford. The team’s record is now 5-2, 1-1.

2) Tennis hosts Swat Invitational

The women’s tennis team swept all categories at the Swarthmore Invitational this weekend. Anjani Reddy ’04 won A-flight singles, Kristina Pao ’04 won B-flight singles, and Sarah Fritsch ’04 took the C-flight singles crown. Jen Pao ’01 and Laura Swerdlow ’02 won A-flight doubles, Caroline Celano ’04 and Anjani Reddy ’04 won B-flight doubles, while Kristina Pao ’04 and Fran Simonds ’02 took C-flight doubles. 

3) Women’s X-C defeats JHU

The women’s cross country team won thier dual meet with John’s Hopkins 22-33. Joko Agunloye ’01 won the 5K race in a time of 20:28. Krista Gigone ’04 took second place. The team’s record is now 1-0 on the season.

4) Volleyball splits tri-meet

The volleyball team travelled to Bryn Mawr for a triple match with the Mawrters and Gettysburg. Swat lost to Gettysburg 3-0 (8-15, 8-15, 4-15), but defeated Bryn Mawr 3-0 (15-4, 15-7, 15-5). The team is now 3-7, 1-2. 

5) Garnet Tide falls to Hopkins

Despite a career-high 131 yards rushing from Ken Clark ’01, the football team fell to John’s Hopkins by a 35-0 score, bringing their record to 1-1, 0-1 on the season. 

6) Men’s X-C drops match

The men’s cross country team lost to John’s Hopkins 22-23, even though Marc Jeuland ’01 won the four-mile race in a time of 22:50. The team’s record is 0-1.

7) Women’s soccer loses tight game

On Friday the women’s soccer team was defeated by NYU 1-0, despite 13 saves from Sari Altschuler ’01. The team’s record is now 2-3, 0-1.

8) Men’s soccer falls as well

Saturday’s 7-0 loss to John’s Hopkins dropped the men’s soccer team’s record to 1-4, 0-2. 

9) World sports roundup

Tom Malchow set an Olympic record in the 200-meter butterfly, winning the prelims in 1:56.25. …The US men’s basketball team trounced China after an early scare from China’s three 7-footers. The “Walking Great Wall” got into early foul trouble, and the US squad was able to pull away for an easy 119-72 win. …The Indians hammered the Yankees 15-4 to take a half-game lead over the idle A’s for the AL wild card. …Chris DiMarco shot a final round 69 to win the inagural Pennsylvania Classic, his first win in 159 career starts on the PGA tour.
