NEWS REPORT
1) Housing update
And they’re off…
The lucky soul with lottery number one picked into Wharton, but not too
many others did in last night’s Senior Housing Lottery. In all, there are
30 single spaces left in Wharton, second only to Parrish (40). Wharton AB
is especially empty, as many seniors picked into soon-to-be-renovated CD.
Wharton CD and Worth were the most heavily favored areas for seniors. Mertz
was also well represented, though it seemed at times that more two-room
doubles were being chosen than singles. There are 23 singles left in Mertz
and only three out of twelve two-room doubles.
As for the less desirable dorms, no one picked into Hallowell or Willets,
all but two singles are still available in Pittenger, and mostly all of
Parrish 4th has yet to be chosen. In all, there are about 163 singles and
two-room doubles left for hungry rising juniors.

Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori led early presidential election results
Sunday, but appeared headed for a runoff vote in his attempt to win an
unprecedented third five-year term. …In a major step forward in relations
between two nations that are technically still at war with each other, the
leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to meet for the first time.
…A Marine Corps aircraft attempting to land in Marana, Arizona during a
nighttime training mission crashed and burst into flames, killing all 19
aboard. …Thirty five Cubans were taken into custody after making it to
shore near a state park in the Florida Keys Sunday. Most of the migrants
were detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents early Sunday. …A 36-year-old
firefighter on death row for the murders of four co-workers and his
estranged wife died early Sunday in a Mississippi prison of natural causes.
…Now for our human interest segment: Two fishermen who were stranded last
week on a tiny coral cay after their boat sank in shark-infested waters off
Sydney, Australia have made their way to dry land.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Men’s tennis sweeps Rochester
The men’s tennis team defeated Rochester University 7-0 Sunday. All six
singles players for the Garnet won their matches in straight sets in the
new Mullan Tennis Center. The team is now 4-6 on the season.

2) Women’s tennis beats Dickinson
On Saturday, the women’s tennis team defeated Dickinson College 6-3.
Swarthmore gained one doubles point from the #1 team of Jen Pao ’01 and
Laura Swerdlow ’02 (8-2). At #4 doubles, Laura Brown ’00 and Kim Tu ’02
were victorous 8-3. Singles winners for the Garnet were #1 Pao 6-2, 6-1, #2
Swerdlow 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, #4 Tanya Chodibut ’03, 6-2, 6-1, #5 Jamie Flather
’00, 6-3, 6-2, and #6 Brown 7-5, 6-1. The team is now 6-1 in the conference.

3) Golf sweeps quad match
The men’s golf team took on Widener and Delaware Valley on Friday, while
USP failed to show. The Garnet were victorious, posting a team score of
352, to defeat both Widener (353) and Delaware Valley (372). Matt Kaufman
’01 led the way with a 76, while James Dolan ’02 added an 83 and Ben Wiles
’03 shot 84. The team’s record is now 8-5-1.

4) Track teams show mixed results
There were lots of great individual performances against Johns Hopkins
Saturday, but only the women were able to come out victorious. In defeating
Hopkins 87-80, Desiree Peterkin ’00 won both the Long Jump and the Triple
Jump, while Joko Agunloye ’01 took the 1500 and the 3000. Imo Akpan ’02 won
the 100 and the 200, while Sarah Jay ’01 won the 800.
On the men’s side, the team lost to JHU 107-78, but Steve Dawson ’00 was a
triple winner, taking the High Jump, the Long Jump, and the Triple Jump.
Marc Jeuland ’01 won the 1500 and the 5000, while Kwaku Sefa-Deneh ’02 took
home the 110 high hurdles and the 400 intermediate hurdles.

5) Softball takes tough losses
The softball team lost a doubleheader to Dickinson Saturday, losing the
first game 4-0 and the second 7-0. The Garnet managed only two hits in the
first game, and only three in the second. Out of their five hits on the
day, three came from Stephanie Wojtkowski, including a double. The team’s
record now stands at 2-15, 0-6.

6) Men’s lacrosse takes second loss
The Men’s lacrosse team dropped Saturday’s contest to Bates 12-5, dropping
their record to 6-2 on the season. Mark Dingfield ’01 led the way for the
Garnet with two goals and one assist. Patrick ’03 added two goals while
John Murphy ’03 scored one goal and assisted another.

7) Women’s lacrosse loses
The women’s lacrosse team suffered an 11-5 loss to Gettysburg Saturday.
Julie Finnegan led the losing cause with two goals while Kristen English
’01 added one goal and an assist. Katie Tarr ’02 chipped in a goal while
Jane Kendall ’00 recorded 20 saves in goal for the Garnet, as their record
falls to 5-5, 1-3.

8) Women ruggers outplay F&M
The women’s rugby team defeated Franklin and Marshall on Saturday as they
continued their winning streak. A-side won 62-0 as Danielle D’Olivera ’00
(3), Noelle Goodin ’00 (2), Abigail Stwart-Tietelbaum ’01, Alexa Miller
’00, Elizabeth Meehan ’01, Meredith Hegg ’00, and Emily Sigalow ’02 scored
tries and Rhiana Swartz ’00 had 6 conversion kicks. B-side won 7-5 as
Esther Kim ’03 had the try and Sara Cole ’03 hit the kick to clinch the win.

9) Baseball loses big
The baseball team was pounded 19-2 by Western Maryland on Saturday, as the
second game was postponed due to rain. Jay Schembs ’01 provided the lone
bright spot for the Garnet with a home run, but it wasn’t enough as their
record fell to 5-11, 1-4 on the season.

10) Family Fun Run still fun despite snow
In conjunction with Family Weekend, the three mile Family Fun Run debuted
in the snowy weather Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.. A large number of
participants had signed up but only a few braved the conditions. The first
place winners for a Mixed Team (male and female runners) were Gabriel and
Kathleen Tajeu. The winners of the Women’s Team competition went to Rebecca
and Ginger Brodie. The male winner was Bob Brodie and the female winner was
Nellie Schultz. Also making a grand appearance were members or the men’s
rugby team: Elijah Porter, Kyung Lee, Joe Tucker, Brendan Nyhan, David
Plante, and Joon Suk Choi.

11) World sports roundup
Vijay Singh won the Masters Sunday, his second career major, by two strokes
over Ernie Els. David Duval finished in a tie for third with Loren Roberts,
while Tiger Woods finished a disappointing sixth. …Tim Hardaway threw up
a prayer from 25 feet away in the last second of overtime and it went in
for a 95-94 Heat win over the Knicks, giving themselves a healthy
three-game margin in the Atlantic Conference heading into the final two
weeks of the regular season. …Arizona’s Randy Johnson went the distance
Sunday, pitching a complete game shutout while striking out 13 and giving
up only 5 hits, as the D’Backs defeated Pittsburgh 1-0.
