NEWS REPORT
1) World news roundup
Juan Miguel Gonzalez, Elian’s father, arrived from Cuba yesterday in the
hopes to bring his little boy home…. Vietnam began work yesterday on an
ambitious project to build a 1,000-mile-long national highway along the Ho
Chi Minh Trail, the network of jungle roads that funneled Communist troops
and supplies to South Vietnam during the Vietnam War…. Alejandro Toledo,
a former shoeshine boy, could become Peru’s first Amerindian president in
their elections this weekend. He is the favorite against incumbent
President Alberto Fujimori…. American Holocaust scholar Deborah Lipstadt
and British historian David Irving are embroiled in a complex case involving
Irving’s right to publish his belief that the Holocaust did not happen.
Irving, once a higly respected historian, has lost credibility among
scholars for his belief that Hitler was an over-worked leader who didn’t
know what his followers were doing, that the Diary of Anne Frank is as
fictional as Gone with the Wind, and that there was no industrial strength
extermination of the Jews. He pointed out to courts yesterday that no one
has ever found a signed order from Hitler calling for the extermination of
Jews, stating “I have to remind you of a basic principle of English
law–that a man is innocent until he is proved guilty.” Irving sued
Lipstadt for her published description of him as “one of the most dangerous
spokespersons for Holocaust denial,” saying that such accusations have cost
him his career.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) Women’s lacrosse falls to College of New Jersey
Women’s lacrosse fell 17 to 5 on Thursday in their game against the
University of New Jersey. After a strong beginning and a tie of 3-3 midway
through the first half, the Lions jumped to a lead of 9-3 and kept it.
Kristen English got 2 goals and one assist, while Katie Tarr scored 2 goals
as well. Jane Kendall made 24 saves. The Garnet is now 5 and 4 overall.

2) Softball shut out by Albright
Softball was shut out 9-0 by Albright yesterday. Two hits were made, both
singles, by Stephanie Wotjowski and Lashanna Lawler. The Garnet is now 2
and 13 for the season.

3) World sports roundup
The NFL draft is coming up, and top picks are expected to be Plaxico Burress
of Michigan State, LaVarr Arrington and Courtney Brown of Penn State, and
Thomas Jones of Virginia…. Georgia Tech is replacing basketball coach
Bobby Cremins with the relatively unknown Paul Hewitt, who will be GT’s
first black coach…. Cal Ripken is only days away from 3,000 hits.
