Under the threat of NATO airstrikes, Serbia’s parliament voted
overwhelmingly on Thursday to send delegates to peace talks Saturday over
the Kosovo crisis. Speaker Dragan Tomic announced that the Serbian
government was committed to a peaceful resolution of the violence in the
Kosovo province, but voiced strong opposition to the deployment of NATO
forces into the region. Alain Richard, the Defense Minister of France,
discussed Thursday a peacekeeping force that could number between 25,000
and 30,000 soldiers. President Clinton indicated that several thousand
American soldiers may participate in such a force.

TOP SEEDS DROP LIKE FLIES TO UNDERDOGS IN NCAA FRENZY
Upsets were the way of the night Thursday, as five of the six games went to
the
lower ranked team. When all was said and done, only UCLA was able to hold off
the threat of the upset, but they needed a last second bucket to overcome
Oregon.
* Florida started the carnage by knocking off No. 5 Kentucky, 75-68 in
front of
a record crowd. The Gators (16-4, 7-3 South Eastern Conference) withstood a
late Kentucky rally and held on for their biggest win in the past three years
since Billy Donovan came on as head coach. The loss broke Kentucky’s (19-5,
8-2 SEC) 15 game road winning streak.
* Coming in with a six-game losing streak, their longest in 11 years, Clemson
was more than unfavored to knock off No. 9 North Carolina. But that’s exactly
what they did, with the help of 10 3-pointers, in upsetting the Tar Heels
78-63. North Carolina (18-6, 6-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) came in winning
four of their last five, but played extremely lackadaisically, leaving the
door
wide open for a hungry Tigers (13-9, 2-6 ACC) team.
* In the night’s final game, the Washington Huskies managed to pull off a most
unlikely upset against 11th ranked Arizona. The 90-84 win is the sixth for
the
Huskies (13-7, 6-4 Pac-10) in their last seven games, including an upset of
No.
13 UCLA last weekend. Arizona (15-4, 7-3 Pac-10) got 28 points from Jason
Terry, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Washington, which had four players
score in double-digits.
LOVE IT OR NOT, THE GAME IS BACK
The abbreviated NBA season officially kicks off tonight. The most intriguing
matchups of the night include:
* The New York Knicks and the possibly reformed Latrell Sprewell face the
Orlando Magic, who may or may not cut a deal for Dennis Rodman.
* The Jordan-less Bulls travel to Utah for a most anticlimatic finals rematch
with the Jazz.
* Finally, a possible Western Conference finals preview as the Houston
Rockets,
with new acquisition Scottie Pippen face the Los Angeles Lakers, who are most
likely to end up with Rodman, who, along with Shaquille O’Neal, would cause
big
problems for Houston big man Hakeem Olajuwon.
IN OTHER NEWS…
Notre Dame is considering joining the Big Ten, a move which would end 111
years
of being one of the most successful independent collegiate sports systems.
…Wayne Gretzky reached yet another milestone in his storied career Thursday
night as he tied Gordie Howe with his 1,071st career goal, including regular
season and playoffs in both the NHL and the old WHA.
