NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

JORDAN MOURNS HUSSEIN’S DEATH, CROWNS SON

Jordan’s King Hussein died yesterday of lymphatic cancer at the age of 63.
Just
hours after his death, amidst nation-wide mourning, his son Abdulla, 37, was
crowned king. Expressing his regret at Hussein’s death, President Bill Clinton
pledged to give Jordan $300 million extra in aid, on top of the $225
million it
currently receives from the U.S., to support economic growth in the country.
Clinton and former Presidents George Bush, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford are
traveling to Jordan to attend today’s funeral.

CENSURE CONSIDERED FOR CLINTON

With President Clinton’s impeachment trial looking as if it will conclude
within the week, Democrats are currently drafting a censure movement which can
be used as an alternative to the increasingly-unlikely vote of guilty.
Meanwhile, House prosecutors and White House lawyers disagree about the
significance of Monica Lewinsky’s testimony, with each side claiming that it
supports their case.

IN OTHER NEWS…

The White House will formally unveil a plan today designed to reduce illegal
drug use in the U.S. by half by the year 2007… Three people died Saturday in
Kosovo’s capital when a bomb was thrown outside an Albanian shop…
Stardust, a
NASA spaceship designed to follow comets and retrieve dust from their tails,
was launched yesterday and should return in seven years.

AROUND THE NBA – FINISHING THE WEEKEND STRONG

The NBA’s fast-paced opening weekend came to a close on Sunday, with a number
of high quality games giving all indications that basketball is back and
better
than ever. …The Utah Jazz handily defeated the Lakers in L.A. Sunday night.
Karl Malone and John Stockton overcame the 37 points and 14 rebounds poured in
by Shaquille O’Neal as they combined for 27 of Utah’s final 30 points in
rallying for the win. …The Miami Heat (with an assist from Sprewell himself)
ruined the Madison Square Garden debut for Latrell Sprewell, holding him to
five points on 2-12 shooting as they defeated the Knicks 83-79.  A bricked
3-pointer by Sprewell coupled with a missed layup by Patrick Ewing with ten
seconds left in the game sealed it for New York.

PRO BOWL PERHAPS ELWAY’S LAST HURRAH

Yes, a bunch of guys played football in Hawaii yesterday.  The Pro Bowl, never
quite approacing the media circus surrounding even the lamest Super Bowl
commercial, nonetheless featured what might turn out to be the final drive of
John Elway’s illustrious career.  Only playing one series in the first
quarter,
Elway nonetheless methodically brought the AFC up the field on a 61-yard
drive,
and capped it with a 3-yard TD pass to Sam Gash that put them in the lead for
good, eventually winning 23-10 over the NFC.

IN OTHER NEWS. …

The Colorado Avalanche extended their franchise record winning streak to 12
games with a win over the Dallas Stars Sunday.  They are now five wins shy of
the NHL record of 17 straight wins set by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1993.
…Duke replaced Connecticut as the No. 1 team in the country in this week’s
ESPN/USA Today men’s college basketball coaches poll. …Excessive rains
caused
the final round of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am to be cancelled, resulting in a
54-hole win for Payne Stewart.
