Weekly Column: Swat Says

This or That from the Swarthmore community:

What is your favorite dorm that you’ve lived in?

Adrian Ferguson ’26: Woolman because it’s mostly on-campus, but the rooms are really big, and it’s beautiful, and you’ve got AC.

Louis Luo ’27: Parrish fourth, best location. You can wake up three minutes before class, and you’ll make it there on time.

William Lee ’26: Woolman, which is the one I’m living in now. I’m a STEM student, so I live in Sci and Singer, and I’m a five-minute walk from both of them. Despite being far away from the dining center, I get my steps in. The rooms are big there too.

Anya Chu ’27: Palmer. It’s either Palmer or Willets.

Jace Boland ’27: Pittenger for sure. Not Willets basement, I’m working with a small sample size.

Abby Guise ’26: I’m gonna have to go with DK because of the showers, because of the double curtain. Also, there’s a ledge to put your stuff on, and if you’re shaving your legs you have a little ledge to put your legs on. Now that I’m living in Hallowell I have to go from the bathroom to my room wearing a towel.

Tara Dhawale ’28: I’m a freshman so I’ve only lived in Willets. But I love Willets, I think it’s great. I really like the social life.

Avinash Van Dort ’28: Willets, hot take. I feel like I really like my Willets single. I like the big windows. Honestly, that’s the only reason.

Julian Cassinelli ’28: I’ve only lived in Willets and it’s pretty bad. It seems like the other dorms are a lot nicer.

Olivia Medeiros-Sakimoto ’25: Kyle House. I cannot emphasize enough: it’s such a great dorm. I was in a really big room that always had sunlight, and the kitchen was always so tidy, at least when I was living there.

Do you think Clothier rings too often, not enough, or just the right amount?

Adrian Ferguson ’26: Not often enough. *smiles*

Louis Luo ’27: Too often. I wished it rang every thirty minutes.

William Lee ’26: Y’know, I think the fact that I don’t notice it anymore, it may be ringing a little too often, but it doesn’t bother me, because I’ve been hearing it for two and a half years.

Anya Chu ’27: Way too often.

Jace Boland ’27: Umm, I think just the right amount. I think it’s an integral part of the campus soundscape.

Abby Guise ’26: I think it rings the perfectly right amount. But it pissed me off last semester when it would ring three minutes early. So annoying. But now it’s on time so I appreciate it.

Tara Dhawale ’28: I think it rings too often. I just always hear ringing at the most random times, and I just feel like it’s not helpful.

Avinash Van Dort ’28: Too often. I feel like it just rings most of the time. We should honestly just not have a clock tower.

Julian Cassinelli ’28: I honestly don’t even notice it anymore; I kind of just tune it out. So I’d probably say it rings just the right amount.

Olivia Medeiros-Sakimoto ’25: I think it rings the perfect amount, because it tells me when to hurry the f*ck up because I’m late for class. When I was a freshman I didn’t understand that the length of the bells indicates the hour mark, but eventually something clicked around junior year.

Have you ever been to a performance on campus? What did you think?

Adrian Ferguson ’26: Yes, I like them. I liked the Hammerstein [Rodgers and Hammerstein] Cinderella one a couple of years ago. I wish I had gotten to see Eurydice, that sounded like it would have been cool.

Louis Luo ’27: Yes. I’m involved with the music department. I love all of the concerts that they put up.

William Lee ’26: Yeah, a lot of the dance ensembles. I’ve been in some of the performances myself as a singer.

Anya Chu ’27: I’ve been to a bunch. I used to be an usher so I got to see a lot of performances, and they’re all great.

Jace Boland ’27: Yes, I’ve been to a couple. The one that sticks out to me is DuPont brass last year. It was really good.

Avinash Van Dort ’28: I did, last year, go to a show for Production Ensemble. I think Swarthmore’s theatre program is…hmm…well…I don’t know.

Julian Cassinelli ’28: I’ve been to a talk. Philip Jefferson came from the Federal Reserve. He was very limited on what he could say, though.

Olivia Medeiros-Sakimoto ’25: I feel like I’ve enjoyed every production the theatre department has had. We have so many opportunities for performance on campus, but as an entry point for those who haven’t been to any yet, I would say a dance concert would be great.

Professor Sibelan Forrester on Language Learning

Students at Swarthmore can and do bring up lots of reasons for not wanting to begin or continue a foreign language. It’s too much work; it “costs” too many credits; it’s not as important or interesting as the things they do want
