Philadelphia Eagles Lose to Atlanta Falcons 22-21, Falling to a 1-1 Record

September 19, 2024

This past Monday, Sep. 16, the Philadelphia Eagles played a home game against the Atlanta Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles started the season with a win against the Green Bay Packers but, unfortunately, narrowly lost to the Falcons. The Eagles were missing their star wide receiver A.J. Brown, who is currently out with a hamstring injury. His absence proved to be consequential, as the Eagles struggled without him.

It was initially a slow game, with the Eagles only scoring seven points by halftime, barely leading against the Falcons’ six. Both teams struggled to find momentum, with defense dominating the first half.

A notable play occurred in the second quarter when the Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts passed the ball successfully to DeVonta Smith with a little over five minutes left on the clock. Interestingly, both teams did well in the turnover department, as the Eagles only had one and the Falcons did not commit any. Also, both teams were able to complete 22 first downs.

The game was tight with six lead changes. Both teams fought hard to keep the score close until the final buzzer.

Hurts completed 23 out of 30 passes, passing for a total of 183 yards. On the other hand, the Falcons’ quarterback Kirk Cousins was able to complete 20 out of 29 passes. While Hurts was more accurate with his passes, Cousins’ passing for 241 yards ultimately gave the Falcons an edge in their offensive production.

A crucial play for the Falcons happened when Cousins passed the ball to Darnell Mooney in the third quarter, which led to a touchdown. It allowed the Falcons to take the lead 15-10, but in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to overtake the Falcons until the last couple of minutes.

The most momentous play happened in the fourth quarter after Eagles’ running back Saquon Barkley failed to catch a pass from Hurts. The Falcons were trailing by six points with one minute and 36 seconds remaining when Cousins performed a miraculous 70-yard touchdown drive. Drake London, a wide receiver for the Falcons, caught the game-winning touchdown, bringing Atlanta to their first win of the season.

After that crucial play, the Eagles had a chance to come back against the Falcons. However, Hurts’s long pass for Smith was, unfortunately, intercepted by Falcons’ safety Jessie Bates. The interception sealed the Eagles’ fate, securing the win for the Falcons. Despite their efforts, the Eagles were unable to regain possession, leading to their first loss of the season.

In the postgame interview, Barkley stated, “I let my team down today. Shouldn’t have put the defense in that position.”As of Sep. 17, the Eagles are second in the NFC East, behind the Washington Commanders. They are set to play the New Orleans Saints next on Sunday, Sep. 22 at 1 p.m. EST.
