Although Samuel Franklin ’15 has been working as a DJ at Swarthmore parties since his freshman year, he never received a paycheck for his services. That is, until this fall.

Franklin spent years dutifully mixing tracks, dropping sick beats, and spitting straight fire at Paces and Olde Club. Despite his hard work, Franklin never saw a dime. “When I saw the disco balls, music videos, and even lasers at some parties, I had to wonder,” Franklin said. “Isn’t there room in the budget for something for me?”

Franklin had even heard tell of a rumored “DJ fund,” but was unable to trace the source of this money or gain access to it, despite having worked diligently as a DJ throughout his time at Swarthmore.

Franklin was surprised and gladdened to see the paycheck in his mailbox last September after DJing the previous weekend. Throughout the year, he has received payment for his work.

Despite this lucky turn of fate, the DJ’s good fortune is unlikely to last long: the college recently announced that it will stop funding DJs under its new DJ policy.
