Softball Sweeps Eastern, Baseball Wins Third In a Row, Women’s Tennis Rides Five-Game Conference Win Streak

Taking a break from Centennial Conference play, the Swarthmore Softball team (16-10, 2-6) swept Eastern 6-0 and 10-4, winning both games in yesterday afternoon’s double-header.

The Garnet jumped to an early lead in the first game, recording four runs in the first inning thanks to hits from Danielle Seltzer ’13, Suness Jones ’16, and Chelsea Matzko ’15. Two more hits from Rose Pitkin ’14 and Jesslyn Lammerts ’14 in the fifth and sixth innings brought the final score to 6-0, closing the game.

Capitalizing on Eastern errors, the Garnet managed to overcome a struggling offense in the second game, finishing with ten runs despite tallying only five hits. With the score tied 2-2 at the top of the second inning, the Garnet blew the game open with six runs, following with runs in the third and fourth innings to seal the victory.

Notable players: Chelsea Matzko ’15 led the Garnet offense with four hits and three RBI’s. Melissa O’Connor ’14 pitched a complete first game, allowing only four hits while collecting five strikeouts. Sarina Lowe ’14 pitched a complete second game, allowing only six hits and no earned runs.

The Garnet will travel to Arcadia on Thursday, April 11, for a second non-conference double-header. First pitch is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.


Building upon another winning streak, the Swarthmore Baseball team (18-7, 6-1) won their third game in a row with a 10-6 victory over Washington College yesterday afternoon.

After three scoreless innings, the Shoremen beat the Garnet to the board with four runs in the top of the fourth inning. While hits from Nick Constantino ’14 and Joe Rizzo ’15 pulled the Garnet within one run by the bottom of the fifth inning, the Shoremen scored an additional run in the sixth inning to take the 6-4 lead all the way to the bottom of the eighth inning. In an impressive comeback, clutch hits from Tim Kwilos ’13, Nicko Burnett ’14, Scoop Ruxin ’15, Danny McMahon ’15, and Rizzo capped a six-run eighth inning to bring the final score to 10-6.

Notable players: Joe Rizzo ‘15 led the Garnet offense with a home run, two doubles, and three RBI’s.

The Garnet will take a break from conference play, remaining at home to play DeSales this afternoon. First pitch is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s Tennis

Riding a Centennial Conference winning streak, the Swarthmore Women’s Tennis team (8-2, 5-0) recorded a 7-2 win against Ursinus yesterday afternoon.

The Garnet was dominant in doubles play, jumping to an early 3-0 lead with victories from No. 1 through 3 doubles. After dropping No. 4 and 5 singles, the Garnet stormed back to take No. 1, 2, 3, and 6 singles, with Emily Rosenblum ’13, Kelsey Johnson ’13, Katie Samuelson ’14, and Gayatri Iyengar ’15.

Notable players: Emily Rosenblum ’13, Kelsey Johnson ’13, and Katie Samuelson ’14 ended the afternoon as double winners.

The Garnet remain home on Saturday, April 13, to play against Franklin & Marshall. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
