Week in Sports: Baseball Outscores UMPI Owls 25-1 In Doubleheader Sweep

Baseball

On Saturday afternoon, the Swarthmore baseball team (7-6) outscored the University of Maine Presque Isle Owls (0-7) by a combined score of 25-1 on route to a doubleheader sweep.

The Garnet won the first game 12-0 on the strength of 13 hits. Pitcher Andy Allen ’11 allowed just five hits over the course of six innings to pick up his first win of the season.

Ramsey Walker ’13 earned the win for Swarthmore in the second game, allowing just one earned run through five innings to go with five strikeouts.

Tom Nakamura ‘11, who went five-for-seven with three RBIs and four runs in the two games, led the Garnet bats.

Softball

The Swarthmore College softball team (6-8) swept the Penn-State Berks Lions 5-3 and 13-5 on Saturday.

Melissa Emmerson ’11 led the Garnet at the plate, finishing the day with two doubles and five RBI amongst her four hits. Michele Perch ’10 added four base knocks and Kira Kern ’11, Angelica Sanchez ’13, and Emily Richardson ’13 each added three hits.

On the mound, Isabel Sanchez ‘13 picked up the win in game one, allowing just two earned runs while striking out four. In game two, Kate Smayda ’13 earned the victory after allowing three earned runs and fanning two.

Men’s Tennis

TCNJ defeated Swarthmore College men’s tennis team 5-4 at the sunny Swarthmore College Avenue Courts on Saturday.

Stephen Youngblood ’12 lost hard-fought No. 1 singles match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, allowing the Lions to edge the Garnet (1-4).

Zak Kelm ’12, Mark Wee ’11, and Max Bressman ’12 all earned wins for the Garnet in singles play. Kelm and Youngblood combined to defeat TCNJ’s Steven and Stewart Fernandez in No. 1 doubles.

Women’s Tennis

On Saturday, the Swarthmore College women’s tennis team (4-2, 2-0 CC) defeated Centennial Conference rival Gettysburg 7-2.

Rosie DuBrin ’12 led the Garnet with victories in No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles. The Swarthmore women also swept singles No. 2 through No. 4 with Emily Rosenblum ’13, Kelsey Johnson ’13, and Alexis Hickman ’11 all picking up victories.

Women’s Lacrosse

Washington College defeated the Swarthmore College women’s lacrosse team 17-4 to open the Garnet’s Centennial Conference schedule.

Annalise Mowry ‘12 paced the Garnet attack with two goals and an assist. Amy Vachal ’11 and Phoebe Hansen ’12 also scored for Swarthmore (3-1, 0-1 CC).

Men’s Lacrosse

A desperate final-minute surge by the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team fell just short of overcoming a four-goal scoring run by No. 10 Dickinson on Saturday at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore’s Gavin Musynske ’10 rattled the crossbar with a long-range shot just before time expired sending the Garnet (1-4, 0-2 CC) to their fourth loss of the season.

Tyler Bradshaw ’10 led the offense with two goals and two assists, to bring his team leading goal tally to 10. Swarthmore also got goals from Musynske, Max Hubbard ’12, Zach Belden ’12, and Wes Marcik ’13.
