NEWS IN BRIEF
SPORTS IN BRIEF
WEATHER FORECAST
Today: Heavy rain. High of 73.
One of the reasons I decided to come to Swat was its strong physics
program.
Tonight: Showers early. Low of 56.
With such a large endowment, I figured I’d be using plenty of high
quality apparatus.
Tomorrow: Mostly sunny. High of 69.
Like the “Play-Doh” circuits we made in lab yesterday.
SHARPLES MENU
Lunch: Fried shrimp, french fries, stuffed cabbage, pierogies,
vegetable blend, corn, cream of asparagus, minestrone, chef salad bar,
cup cakes
Dinner: Chicken marsala, buttered noodles, polenta marinara, casbah
cous cous, spinach, peas and carrots, potato bar, cream pies
NEWS REPORT
* Pfc. Lynndie England of North Carolina has been charged with 19
counts of conspiracy and assault due to accounts of her and others’
mistreatment of inmates at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. The soldier,
now pregnant, has been recommended for a court-martial and faces up to
38 years in prison. She has admitted to stepping on prisoners and
mocking them as nude photographs were taken of them, but a statement
from her attorney claims that her participation in the abuse was
involuntary.
* The town of Playas, New Mexico, has been sold to the U.S. Department
of Homeland Security by the Phelps Dodge Oil Company so that the New
Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology can use it for anti-terror
training. The town’s 50 residents may be offered work on the project,
which will simulate “suicide bombings, anthrax attacks, and
water-supply poisonings,” according to the BBC.
* In keeping with the new space-tourism trend, Virgin boss Richard
Branson has created a company that plans to take passengers into space
in about three years, possibly charging around $181,000 per flight.
Using the technology created for SpaceShipOne, the California company
that was the first private carrier to fly above 100km, Branson hopes to
“break NASA’s monopoly on space policy.”
