NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

The custodial transfer of Elian Gonzalez to his father is in its “final
draft stage”; the transfer is tentatively scheduled for Thursday
morning. Meanwhile, Attorney General Janet Reno is planning a visit to
Miami today to try to resolve the stalemate over the
handover. …Zimbabwe’s Parliament adjourned indefinitely Tuesday, the
first step toward scheduling new elections in the economically and
politically shaky south African nation. The body would automatically have
dissolved at midnight tonight, when its five-year term ends. …In a
survey published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association,
39 percent of doctors surveyed admitted to “sometimes” deceiving insurance
companies to help patients get the care they need. Their tactics
include: exaggerating  the severity of an illness to help patients avoid
being sent home early from the hospital; listing an inaccurate diagnosis
on bills; and reporting nonexistent symptoms to secure insurance
coverage. …Officials at the Washington psychiatric hospital where
Presidential assailant John W. Hinckley Jr. is staying say that Hinckley
should be granted unsupervised day-long visits with his parents. Hinckley
was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 1981 assassination attempt
of President Reagan. The request for unsupervised trips is the second step
in a three-step process that ultimately seeks the court’s permission for a
permanent release from the hospital.
