America’s largest group of rabbis have become the first major religious
denomination to officially sanction same-sex unions, offering the protection
of Reform Judaism to clergy who decide to officiate at such ceremonies….  
The Supreme Court affirmed on Wednesday cities’ power to ban nude dancing,
rejecting arguments that the dancing is expressive conduct fully protected
by the First Amendment….  Patent applications for basic business practices
such as Amazon.com’s “one-click” online shopping will get a deeper and more
stringent review under new federal rules announced yesterday….  A
nerve-wracking volcano watch goes into its fifth day today on Japan’s
northern island of Hokkaido, as cracks opened in Mount Usu and more than 100
quakes or tremors every hour shook the area. About 11,000 people have been
evacuated from homes at the base of the mountain….  The last of 81 bodies
was recovered yesterday from a pit just 6 feet deep and 4 feet square as the
death toll of Ugandan doomsday cult members climbed to 644–half of them
found entombed in hastily dug graves or encased in concrete.

U.S. Tennis stars Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras advanced to the semifinals
of the Ericsson open, held in Key Biscayne, Florida; Agassi will play
Gustavo Kuerten and Sampras will play the winner of Jan-Michael Gambill and

Lleyton Hewitt…Tennis star Anna Kournikova and her mother won’t be charged
for their part in a dispute on a recent airline flight, the FBI said
Thursday…For tennis star Venus Williams, 19 could be retirement
age…Jared Palmer and Alex O’Brien were picked Tuesday as the doubles team
for the United States’ Davis Cup quarterfinal against the Czech
Republic…The 2000 French Open will offer prize money of $10.25 million, an
increase of 6.69 percent over last year…Serena Williams, who had planned
to play in next month’s tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C., said Monday
she may skip the event because of a controversy concerning the Confederate
flag…Two-time U.S. Open champion Pat Rafter was recalled to the Australian
Davis Cup team Friday for its quarterfinal against Germany… The tennis
tournament formerly known as the Lipton, the fifth biggest tennis tournament
in the world behind the four Grand Slams, has been renamed the Ericsson.
