1) World news roundup

“American Beauty took home five Academy Awards Sunday night, including Best
Picture, Best Actor (Kevin Spacey), and Best Director (Sam Mendes). Check
below for a somewhat complete list of last night’s winners. …Vladimir
Putin won the Russian Presidential election early Monday morning. As 94% of
the vote had been counted, Putin had an insurmountable lead, with 52.5% of
the vote, with his chief rival, Communist leader Gennadi A. Zyuganov, far
behind with 29.5%. …After three hours of discussion, President Clinton
was unable to convince Syrian leader Hafez al-Assad to resume talks with
Israel. …Pope John Paul II ended his historic pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Sunday at the Western Wall in Jerusalem, where he placed a note to God
asking for forgiveness and brotherhood for all mankind. …

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Men’s lax off to best start in 16 years

The men’s lacrosse team defeated King’s College 23-0, the largest margin of
victory in school history and the team’s first shutout since 1985. Leading
the way for the Garnet were Mark Dingfield ’01, with four goals and three
assists, and Than Court ’03, who had four goals and two assists. Blake
Atkins ’02 added three goals and three assists, while John Murphy ’03
chipped in three and two. The team’s record is now 5-0, their best start
since the 1984 season.

2) Men’s tennis over Washington

The Garnet got big wins from their fourth through sixth singles players and
pulled off a 4-3 victory over Washington. John Thomas ’02 won 6-2, 6-0,
Justin Singer ’03 won 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Jayson Yost ’03 won 6-4, 7-6.
Also, the doubles teams of Thomas and John Temin ’00 (8-5) and Yost and
Scott Grant ’01 (8-2) were also victorious. The team’s record is now 3-4.

3) Tough loss to ‘Ford for women’s lax

In the Seven Sisters Tournament at Mount Holyoke, the women’s lacrosse team
defeated Smith in the first round 11-10. Katie Tarr ’02 led the way with
six goals and one assist, while Mavis Biss ’02 added three goals and an
assist. However, in the semifinals the team suffered a heartbreaking loss
to rival Haverford, 11-10 in triple overtime. Tarr had four goals and an
assist, while Jane Kendall ’00 turned away 26 shots on goal. The team is
now 3-1 on the season.

4) Swarthmore Track Invitational produces winners.

At Saturday’s Swarthmore Invitational, the Garnet athletes made their
school proud. Marc Jeuland ’01 won the 1500, Steve Dawson ’00 won the high
jump, and the men’s 4×400 team was victorious. On the women’s side, Desiree
Peterkin ’00 was a double winner, taking the long jump and the triple jump.
Joko Agunloye ’01 won the 1500, Karen Lloyd ’00 took the 3000, Imo Akpan
’02 won the 100, and the 4×400 team took first place.

5) Women’s tennis sweeps Ursinus

Winning all their matches, the Garnet made quick work of Ursinus, coasting
to a 9-0 win. The team’s record is now 2-3, 2-0 in the Centennial Conference.

6) Tough losses for softball

The Garnet softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against
Maryland, 2-0 and 7-0. The team’s record is now 0-9.

7) Women ruggers keep it going

The women’s rugby team continued their winning ways Saturday, beating
Vassar 20-0. Scoring tries for Swarthmore were Meghan Brennan ’00, Sarah
Nusser ’02, Meredith Hegg ’00, and Danielle D’Olivera ’00.

8) World sports roundup

The Final Four is set. North Carolina earned a very unlikely berth by
defeating Tulsa 59-55 in the South Final Sunday. In the East, Florida
surprised Oklahoma St. with a 77-65 win to claim the final spot in the
Final Four. Michigan St. and Wisconsin earned places on Saturday. …Hal
Sutton held a three stroke lead over Tiger Woods when rain stopped their
play at the 11th hole of the final round of the Player’s Championship at
Sawgrass. Play will resume on Monday morning. …Shaquille O’Neal iced a
Laker victory over the Sacramento Kings from an unlikely place – the free
throw line. Shaq’s three-point play with 6.5 seconds left gave L.A. a 90-89
victory over their cross-state rivals. …As spectators lined the streets
and cheered, the Seattle Kingdome was demolished Sunday. The former home to
the Mariners and Seahawks, a state-of-the-art engineering marvel 24 years
ago when it was built, fell victim to falling ceiling tiles a few years
ago, and has been falling apart ever since.
