WEATHER FORECAST

Today: Chance of flurries. Highs mid to upper 30s.
 There’s just nothing funny about this snow anymore, is there?

Tonight: Cloudy. Lows in the low 20s.
 I mean, yeah, it’s pretty, and we don’t have to shovel it, and we can
play in it, and if there’s lots of it we might not have to go to class…

Tomorrow: Partly sunny. Highs in the upper 30s.

NEWS REPORT

1) Trotter 201 to be computer lab

The Computing Center announced that the PC classroom in Trotter 201 will be
available as a public lab starting February 7. The lab has 23 PCs running
Windows NT 4.0 with a variety of applications including Netscape
Communicator, MS Office 97, Matlab and Mathmatica.

The lab will be available during the following hours:

Monday – Thursday 6:00pm – 2:00am
Friday 6:00pm – 10:00pm
Saturday 10:00am – 10:00pm
Sunday 12:00pm – 2:00am

2) Swat College Bowl teams battle each other at GW

Two Swarthmore College Bowl teams attended a tournament at George
Washington University Saturday. After 10 rounds, the two teams emerged with
records of 6-4 and 3-7.

“Swarthmore Peter,” containing Dan Blim ’02, Arcadia Falcone ’02, Dan
Fairchild ’03, Jonah Volk ’03, and Peter Austin ’02, emerged with a winning
record, including victories over Georgetown, Princeton, George Mason,
Virginia and two teams from Johns Hopkins.

Despite Swarthmore Peter’s overall success, they fell to the team of
“Swarthmore Josh,” with Rebecca Paul ’02, Syd Roy ’02, Mark Romanosky ’03,
Ben Schak ’03, and Josh Miller ’01. In the battle of the Swarthmore teams,
a close game, Miller answered the final tossup to ensure his team’s 235-205
victory.

4) World news roundup

A Kenya Airways jet crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Abidjan, Ivory
Coast late Sunday night, carrying 169 passengers and 10 crew members. The
crash occurred just one minute after take off from the Abidjan Airport.
Officials reported that at least seven people have been pulled from the
water alive. …Israelis and Pakistanians have set an ambitious Februrary
13 deadline for an outline of a final accord that would solve the largest
of their problems. …A coal train derailed near the Maryland/West Virgina
border Sunday morning and one car plowed into a house, killing a teenage
boy and injuring four members of his family. …An eastern Australian heat
wave has claimed the lives of 22 people in four days, as temperatures in
Brisbane have reached 106 degrees. Temperatures are expected to ease
Monday. …

SPORTS UPDATE

1) Women’s basketball ties for conference lead

On Saturdaythe women’s basketball team defeated Gettysburg 55-53, to tie
Muhlenberg for first place in the Centennial Conference, with a 6-1 record.
The team’s overall record is 10-7. Heather Kile ’02 led the way with 15
points and 17 reboudns. Sarah Tufano ’03 added 14, and Heather Marandola
’01 contributed 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

2) Bullets pound men’s b-ball at Gettysburg

The men’s basketball team fell on the battlegrounds of Gettysburg by the
score of 72-52. David Gammill ’02 led the losing cause with 11 points, and
Joe Culley ’00 added nine. The loss drops the team’s record to 3-14, 2-5 in
the Centennial Conference.

3) Swim teams fall, pool record set

Both swimming teams lost at home to Gettysburg over the weekend. The women
fell 118-87, and the men lost 197-93. The records stand at 8-2, 4-1 for the
women and 5-4, 2-2 for the men.

On a bright note, the 400 Medley team of Becca Howes-Mischel ’01, Natalie
Briones ’03, Alice Bonarou ’02, and Claire Arbour ’00 set a pool record
with a time of 5:05.9. Briones also has a national qualifying time in the
200 Breaststroke. Bonarou won the 200 Butterfly and Arbour took the 100
Freestyle.

On the men’s side, David Whitehead ’03 was a triple winner – he swam a leg
in the winning 400 Medley, and took the 200 Free and the 200 Butterfly.
John Lillvis ’03 won the 200 individual medley relay, Brent Wasser ’00 took
the 200 Backstroke, and Ted Sherer ’01 won the 200 Breaststroke.

4) Wrestling results unavailable

The wrestling team travelled to Western Maryland Saturday for a Centennial
Conference quad-meet. However, results are unavailable as of press time.

5) World sports roundup

The St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV,
23-16. In one of the closest title games in recent memory, the Titans were
stopped on the one-yard line as time expired, sealing the win for the Rams
and the MVP trophy for QB Kurt Warner, who threw for a Super Bowl record
414 yards. …In his first major move since taking over control of
Washington Wizards basketball operations, Michael Jordan fired head coach
Gar Heard and replaced him with CBA coach and former Bulls teammate Darrell
Walker. …Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy will head the Eastern Conference in
the All-Star game in two weeks. The Knicks beat the Kings 120-111 Sunday to
give Van Gundy the dubious honor. …Tom Lehman won for the first time in
four years, taking the Phoenix Open by one stoke over Robert Allenby.
