Now that the homecoming barbecue isn’t down on the baseball field, I
guess we don’t have to protest that injustice anymore.

It’s kind of a shame, though.

NEWS REPORT
1) Swarthmore to host debate national championships
Swarthmore will be hosting the National Parliamentary Debate
Championships on April 14-16th, 2000. Swarthmore won the bid for the
tournament at a meeting at Columbia University this weekend. The
victory reflects Swarthmore’s growing recognition on the national debate
circuit, which can, in part, be attributed to the success of Damon
Taaffe ’99 and John Dolan ’01, who finished as 7th place in the nation
last year. The debate society has also acquired a reputation for its
powerful reservoir of young talent.
Hosting Nationals is a significant endeavor, involving over 40
schools and 200 debators from across the country. Tenaya Scheinman ’01,
Mimi Hanaoka ’01, John Dolan ’01, and Darius Ornston ’00 will be
co-directing the tournament.

1) Women’s soccer falls to Eastern
The women’s soccer team lost to Eastern 3-1 on Saturday. Elizabeth
Fortier ’03 scored Swarthmore’s lone goal on an assist from Heather
Marandola ’01. The team’s record is now 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the
Centennial conference.

2) Women’s rugby wins first divisional game
On Saturday the women’s rugby team edged out divisional foe Shippensburg
12-10. Meredith Hegg ’00 scored both Swarthmore tries and Rhiana Swartz
’00 hit the game-deciding conversion. B-side lost 0-5.

McGwire hits 59th homer. …Bronco’s Mobley, Chiefs’ Anders both out for
