WEATHER FORECAST

Today: Partly cloudy. High near 80.
So the construction on Parrish beach is supposed to help make
the paths less steep.

Tonight: Cloudy. Low in the mid 60s.
Which is fine, since everybody always hated that hill.

Tomorrow: Scattered showers. High in the low 80s.
My calves will miss the workout, though. The walk from Sharples to
Parrish made me buff.

2) The Football Question returns

The Swarthmore football team opened its season by momentarily silencing its
critics with a streak-breaking, 42-6 win over Oberlin. Thrilling as the victory
was, many were quick to point out that it was “only one game.” The question
remains, however: Does the football team’s victory change your opinion about
the program?

“The anti-football sentiment just isn’t worth the effort people are putting
into it. Football has been made into an ambassador for athletics in general to
people not involved. I just hope they (admissions) doesn’t admit people just
because they’re good at football, but I also hope they don’t admit people just
because they scored a 1600 on their SATs.” — Marah Gotcsik ’02

“It’s just one game. They just happened to put us against the only team we had
a realistic shot at beating. Now, if they win next Saturday, then we’ll see…”
— Justin Capps ’02

“The headline should have been, ‘Robin Mamlet beats Oberlin football team.'” —
Spike

“I understand that football is an expensive program, but I feel like the
$20,000 for new jerseys went to those 40 or 50 people, and there are important
clubs that never see close to that amount.” — Nina Chien ’01

“It confirmed a rumor I’d heard that they took a lot of football players out of
the reject pile and admitted them.” — George Balgobin ’00

“There are some people who will never change [their opinion of football],
whether they win or lose. But I think that for the freshmen, it gives them a
fresh start, to start the year with a winning team.” — Ben Park ’02
