1) World news roundup

NATION GRIEVES, REGROUPS…

The nation mourned the loss of 12 students and one teacher in the Columbine
High School massacre during a moving memorial Sunday attended by 70,000
citizens from around the world, among them Vice-President Al Gore. …Bill
Clinton and Boris Yeltsin spoke on the telephone Sunday, agreeing to work
together towards solving the situation in Kosovo. …NATO Commanders report
that before long helicopters will join the arsenal attacking Yugoslavia.
…Air Force captain Joseph Belli was dismissed from the service and
sentenced to a 15 day prison term after pleading guilty to fraternization,
conspiracy and disobeying direct orders in connection with an affair with
an enlisted woman.

1) Jen Pao ’01 named singles champion

Defeating top-seeded Dickinson singles player Molly Williams 5-0, Jen Pao
’01 won the Centennial Conference Individual Championship. Pao is the first
individual from Swarthmore ever to capture the title.

2) Golf places last at championships

Shooting a collective 901, the Garnet golfers took seventh place overall at
the Centennial Conference Championships this weekend, which was attended by
seven teams. James Dolan ’02, who shot 202, took ninth place, while Matt
Kaufman ’01 took thirteenth with a 207.

3) Baseball loses

Baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Gettysburg on Saturday,
losing 2-0 and 5-0 to bring their season record to 9-14 overall (4-8 in the
Centennial Conference).

4) Men’s lax loses

Saturday saw a loss from the men’s lacrosse team as well, suffering a 22-1
defeat at the hands of Gettysburg. Blake Atkins ’02 scored the lone goal.
The team falls to 2-11, 0-5.

5) Women’s lax loses

A close game against Western Maryland ended in a 19-18 defeat for the
Garnet women’s lacrosse team on Saturday. Holly Baker ’99 scored nine times
and had three assists, while Katie Tarr ’02 scored eight times and also had
three assists. The team falls to 6-8, 3-5.

6) Softball has no luck at Gettysburg

The softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Gettysburg
on Saturday, losing 11-1 and 12-2. The team’s season record is now 0-20
(0-12 in the Centennial Conference).

7) Earthworms leave PA sectionals unhappy

The earthworms began with high hopes but ended without any wins at the PA
sectionals at Haverford on Saturday. They dropped games to UPenn, U
Pittsburgh, Lehigh, and a 14-13 squeaker to Haverford. Saturday saw the
last games for seniors Roger Bock, Noam Unger, Mac Funk, Matt Coddington,
and Benson Wilder.

8) Women’s rugby ends season on high note

Swat woman ruggers racked up 39 points against their four opponents and
allowed only five total points to be scored against them at the West
Chester Tournament this weekend. Despite this impressive imbalance, Swat
failed to make it into the playoffs, but in their consolation match against
Lafayette yesterday morning, the women took it out on Lafayette, winning
15-0 in a beautiful team effort.

10) World sports roundup

ELWAY SAYS GOODBYE, BUT THERE’S STILL HOCKEY TO PLAY…

John Elway will announce his retirement from the NFL in a press conference
later this week.  The Super Bowl MVP has decided not to try for a third
straight championship, leaving the game second only to Dan Marino in career
passing yards and total offense. …In playoff hockey, Pittsburgh beat the
Devils 4-2 to take a 2-1 series lead; Buffalo took care of the Senators
3-0, surging to a 3-0 lead in their series; Dallas took the same 3-0 lead
over Edmonton with a 3-2 win; the Coyotes snuck by St. Louis 5-4 to take a
2-1 series edge; the Red Wings are up 3-0 after a 4-2 victory over the
Ducks. …The Washington Redskins will announce the sale of the team to a
group headed by businessman Daniel Snyder Monday.  The team, as well as
Jack Kent Cook stadium, reportedly were sold in a package deal in the
neighborhood of $800 million.
