ALBRIGHT, CLINTON IN ACTION WHILE DISASTER STRIKES IN ILLINOIS

After months of negotiations, North Korea has agreed to permit US inspections
of a suspected nuclear site. The US has accused North Korea of violating a 1994
agreement which outlawed the development of nuclear weapons, as well as
producing biological and chemical weapons. The agreement was made public
yesterday by Secretary of State Madeleine Albright after talks in New York.
James P. Rubin, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, announced that the
U.S. will provide agricultural aid to North Korea, which suffers from severe
famines. …Fourteen people were killed and 119 injured when a tractor- trailer
truck collided with an Amtrak train in Illinois. The train was derailed,
splitting one of the two engines in half and scattering passenger cars
throughout the area. …At an international conferenence that commenced
yesterday, President Clinton called for a debt relief plan in which Africa
would be forgiven over $70 billion in debt. The conference addresses US-
African relations and includes delegates from 50 African countries.

INJURY, EXPANSION, VICTORY AND STUPIDITY…

The Chicago Cubs will have to deal with life without ace starter Kerry Wood
this season.  The Rookie of the Year is out for the year with a torn ulnar
collateral ligament in his right elbow which requires surgery. …The NFL
tentatively announced plans to give Los Angeles the 32nd NFL franchise, when
expansion begins again in 2002.  Houston still has a shot at taking the team,
however. …The Miami Heat beat the Washington Wizards 94-85 Tuesday to claim
the best record in the Eastern Conference. …The British judge in last
weekend’s Holyfield-Lewis fight admitted that he made a mistake in his
judging.  He said that he thought Lewis had won, and was surprised at the end
when he learned that he had judged the fight a draw.
