NEWS REPORT
1) Swat Debate Team cleans up in College Park
This past weekend Swarthmore’s Amos J. Peaslee Debate Society claimed
success at the University of Virginia’s debate tournament held at the
University of Maryland, College Park. Approximately 50 teams of 2 debaters
each attended, five of which came from Swarthmore. The team of Damon
Taaffe ’99 and Allan Friedman ’02 had a 4-1 record in preliminary rounds,
but lost in semi-finals to a team from Columbia. They finished in 4th place
overall. The team of society president Darius Ornston ’00 and
vice-president Tenaya Scheinman ’01 were one of only two undefeated teams
in preliminary rounds. They lost in quarter finals to a team from Princeton
and finished in 5th place overall.
Ornston also claimed honors as the 10th place speaker at the tournament,
while Taaffe finished second. Friedman and David Kamin ’02 earned novice
speaker awards, placing second and fourth, respectively. These successes
come after a dry-spell, broken earlier this year by the dynamic duo of
Taaffe and John Dolan ’01 who placed second at the UPenn tournament and
first at Bucknell, culminating in a rank of fourth team of the year
currenntly.
In addition to these successes, Swarthmore boasts several talented novice
debaters including the team of Mimi Hanaoka ’02 and Dave Ellis ’02 who have
posted winning records and novice team awards recently. The debate society
will be hosting a tournament at Swarthmore the weekend of March 19-20 with
teams coming from as far as Stanford and Canada.

4) Widener crushed by women’s rugby in season-opening scrimmage
Women’s rugby thrashed the largely-experienced Widener team 43-0 on
Saturday despite lending out three players per period. In the first period,
tries were scored exclusively by the backs, with Danielle D’Olivera ’00,
Noelle Goodin ’00, and scrumhalf Meghan Brennan ’00 touching down. Sarah
Cross ’99 and Cathy Vaughan ’01 scored in the second period, while in the
third, Elizabeth Meehan ’01 and rookie Meredith Hegg ’00 each made it to
the try zone. With Nancy Craig ’01 kicking four of seven conversions and
the rest of the team keeping Widener on the defensive, Swat kicked off its
season in true Garnet style.
