WEATHER FORECAST
Today: Cloudy, afternoon snow showers. Highs in the mid 30’s.
I don’t think people take enough showers.
Tonight: More of the same. Lows near 30.
My hall smells like feet.
Tomorrow: Partly sunny and breezy. Highs near 45.
I have never put anyone’s feet in my mouth (except my own).
NEWS REPORT
1) Math Forum nominated for Webby Award
The Math Forum has been nominated for the prestigious Webby Award as one of
the five best web sites in Education. Each year, the International Academy of
Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS) nominates web sites for Webby Awards, the
Internet equivalent of Oscars. Nominees and winners are determined by IADAS
judges, 220 experts in “new media” who excel in their field of expertise. This
year’s judges include notables such as Scott Adams, the creator of “Dilbert”
Gillian Anderson of “X-Files” fame; and Barbara Boxer (D-CA), a United States
Senator. Webbys are awarded in twenty-two categories, such as Commerce, Film,
Sciences, Sports, Weird, and Education.
Founded by students and professor Gene Klotz, Math Forum attempts to establish
an Internet math community. It is funded in part by the National Science
Foundation, and it is currently hosted by Swarthmore College. Many Tri-Co
students and graduates are involved with Math Forum; among other duties, they
program software, collect web resources, and sponsor Math Forum programs such
as the Problem of the Week and other mentored problems.
Math Forum’s web page provides numerous math resources for all grade levels.
Teachers discuss effective teaching techniques on the Teacher2Teacher
discussion group, and problems and solutions are available. Students can
peruse the Math Archives for anything math-related, from history and terms to
examples and proofs. Dr. Math’s FAQ provides elaboration on questions such as “What do
you call a 14-sided polygon?”, “What’s the ‘Sieve of Eratosthenes’?”, and “Why
does .9999…=1?”. Students who do not find answers to their questions in the
Math Archives are able to send their queries to Dr. Math. These and many more
features can be seen at http://forum.swarthmore.edu.
Now that Math Forum has been nominated, it is eligible for two awards: the
Webby Award (determined by the IADAS judges) and the People’s Voice Award
(determined through votes by the public). Anyone who would like to vote for
Math Forum or other sites nominated in the 22 categories will be sent a ballot
and password after registering at http://www.webbyawards.com/best/. Voting
ends February 28; the Webby Awards Ceremony will be March 18 in San Francisco.

KOSOVO, AND OTHER STUFF
The snow just keeps falling in western Austria as rescue crews frantically dig
through mountains of snow looking for survivors after two horrible avalanches
terrorized the Austrian plain Wednesday. …Serbs in Yugoslavia have taken a
victorious stance in light of the temporary Kosovo peace agreement reached
Tuesday, while elections for a new government are being planned for the near
future. …There is going to be a complete overhaul of race laws in England
after the release of a report denouncing British police as racist in light of
the fatal 1993 stabbing of 18-year-old Stephen Lawrence.

SPORTS UPDATE
1) All-Centennial Squad results
When the Centennial Conference announced its all-Centennial basketball squads
Tuesday, Garnet basketball players Heather Kile ’02 and Tim Schofield ’99
showed up among the names. Kile was named to the first team, the first Swattie
to earn that distinction. Kile was first in the conference in both scoring
(478 points, the conference record for a first-year) and rebounds (355 over the
season, also a Garnet record). Schofield, who scored the second-most points in
the conference this season, with an average of 18.5 per game, earned honorable
mention.

2) World sports roundup
DEL, JAZZ, AUBURN, TOP SEEDS GO DOWN
On top of the recent signing (finally) of Dennis Rodman, there is even more
turmoil in L.A. as the Lakers have fired coach Del Harris in light of the
team’s poor 6-6 start. Assistant coach Kurt Rambis will likely replace Harris
at the helm of the NBA’s most talented bunch of underachievers. …Meanwhile,
L.A.’s rival, the Utah Jazz, was stunned Wednesday by Denver, 97-87. The
Nuggets won their second straight behind Nick Van Exel’s 23 points, along with
24 from Antonio McDyess. …No. 2 Auburn lost a shocker to Arkansas, 104-88.
The Tigers, who hadn’t allowed an opponent to score more than 74 points this
season, lost for only the second time. …The onset of the first annual Match
Play Golf Championship saw high seeds drop one after another, with Davis Love
III and Ernie Els joining Mark O’Meara and Colin Montgomerie in the clubhouse
after being upset in Wednesday’s first round.
