NEWS REPORT

1)  Underage drinking leads to two arrests and two hospitalizations

Two underage students were arrested and two others hospitalized Friday
night in three separate alcohol-related incidents. Two male students were
cited by a Swarthmore Borough police officer for underage drinking and
possibly public drunkenness at 11 p.m. As Director of Public Safety Owen
Redgrave explained, a citation for underage drinking and public drunkenness
in the State of Pennsylvania can bring a 90-day traffic suspension and/or a
fine of up to $300 and/or a 90-day jail sentence.

One hospitalization was the result of a male first-year jumping out of his
second floor Wharton West window at 12:30 a.m. He had been earlier thrown
out of a Willets party, and his hallmates, considering him too intoxicated
to be allowed to try to return, were forcibly detaining him in his room.
He was taken down to Worth and then to Chester Crozer Medical Center, where
he was discharged later that morning.

The other hospitalized student was a first-year female who was brought to
Worth Health Center with a blood-alcohol level of 3.5. She was then taken
by ambulance to Chester Crozer Medical Center, where she was treated and
released the next morning.

DUMA REJECTS CHERNOMYRDIN DESPITE RUBLE WOES

The Russian Duma yesterday voted 273-138 not to accept Viktor Chernomyrdin,
who had been nominated by President Boris Yeltsin, as Prime Minister. This
was Chernomyrdin’s second rejection by the Communist-dominated body, and it
came despite pleas by both Yeltsin and himself concerning the need for
leadership in the still-worsening Russian economy. Yeltsin is expected to
announce his third and final nomination by noon today. The ruble continues
to lose value, having already prompted Central Bank Chairman Sergei Dubinin
to offer his resignation yesterday, as rubles were traded at twenty to the
dollar.

MCGWIRE TIES MARIS’ HOME RUN RECORD

The St. Louis Cardinals’ first basemen Mark McGwire yesterday matched Roger
Maris’ 1961 record of 61 home runs in a single season, with 20 games
remaining to pull ahead. The Chicago Cubs’ Sammy Sosa, who with 58 home
runs has hopes of
pulling ahead of McGwire, was on hand to witness the home run; the teams
had met on the Cardinals’ territory for the first of a two-game series. The
Cardinals won 3-2.

IN OTHER NEWS…

A flight data recorder from Swissair Flight 111 was found Sunday, and the
Canadian navy expects to find its cockpit voice recorder soon, but experts
say the recorders may not provide the information of the last seconds as
they had hoped. The plane crashed last Wednesday off the coast of Nova
Scotia, killing 229 people… Flooding continues in Bangladesh, where over
700 lives have been claimed by the water covering 70% of the country…
Jean Kambanda, formerly the Prime Minister of Rwanda,
was sentenced to life in prison for genocide by a UN tribunal Friday.
