NEWS REPORT

1) World news roundup

TROUBLE IN KOSOVO TALKS, TROUBLE IN IRAQ, END OF TROUBLES WITH AIRLINE

Little progress has been made at the Kosovo peace talks despite the
approaching Saturday deadline. If no agreement can be reached then NATO
might resort to air strikes against the Serbs to force a settlement. The
main sticking point is the deployment of NATO forces to enforce the
settlement. The Serbs, who are backed by the Russians, oppose the use of
any troops, but the Albanians do not trust the Serbian government enough to
accept an agreement that does not include the presence NATO troops…
Yesterday, Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan threatened to attack
the Turkish base at Incirlik if the US planes which are stationed there
continue to fly missions into Iraq. National Security Advisor Sandy Berger
said that the US would respond to an attempted attack “swiftly and
firmly”… The sickout by American Airlines pilots has ended, at least
temporarily, as talks resumed between the union and American’s parent
company, AMR Corp. The sickout began because of a dispute over how the
pilots from the recently acquired Reno Air would be paid…. President
Clinton and Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo signed an agreement yesterday
that would measure the progress of each country in fighting drug smuggling.
Despite increasing Congressional doubts about Mexico’s efforts to decrease
drug smuggling, Clinton is expected to renew Mexico’s “certification” as an
ally in the drug war.
