Men’s Cross Country

Border Battle, 6th out of 30

At Rowan University’s Border Battle meet this past Saturday, the Swarthmore College men’s cross country impressed, placing sixth out of 30 teams. On the 8-kilometer trail, Cohen Manges ’27 ran for a sixth-place finish. Shortly after, two Garnet runners finished in 48th and 49th place. All four of the fastest Garnet runners broke their personal records. 

Notable runners: Manges ran a 24:41:1, slashing his previous record by eighteen seconds. Kenneth Relovsky ’27 and Spencer Etheridge ’27 ran a 25:49:9 and 25:50:3, respectively. Relovsky trumped his record by sixteen seconds while Etheridge took a whopping twenty seconds off his. 

Women’s Cross Country, 3rd out of 31

At Logan Township, NJ, in the Rowan Border Battle meet, the Garnet placed third out of 31 teams, dominating the 6-kilometer race. The Garnet’s top finishers placed seventh, nineteenth, and 26th overall. An impressive six runners solidified new personal records at the Border Battle. 

Notable runners: Elizabeth Page ’28 ran a 21:48:3, placing first among regional runners, and knocked 30 seconds off her previous personal best. Olivia Montini ’26 posted a 22:05:7 finish and took sixth place in the region, shaving six seconds off her previous record. With a time of 22:21:8, Ania Wong ’28 placed tenth in the region and leaned out thirteen seconds from her personal best. 

Men’s Soccer

Swarthmore College 2, Dickinson College 2
This past Saturday, Swarthmore College men’s soccer tied No. 6 Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA. The Red Devils started on the front foot, finding a shot in the first minute of the game. After five attempts, they finally slipped a ball past the Garnet keeper in the 26th minute. Finally, in the 37th minute, the Garnet scored off a corner kick. Early in the second half, Swarthmore led 2-1 after a crisp cross and finish past the Dickinson defensive line. However, with just two minutes left, the Garnet gave up a penalty kick, losing their lead and ending the conference game in a 2-2 tie. 

Notable players: Adrien Marcelli ’26 led in shot attempts with three, scoring the Garnet’s opening goal. Tejas Sarna ’25 scored the second goal. Christian Bignotti ’25 made five saves. 

Swarthmore College, Muhlenberg College

On Wednesday night, Swarthmore men’s soccer hosted Muhlenberg College at Clothier Stadium. In the first half, both teams were able to find six shots and posted three saves. The Mules were able to get one more shot on goal than the Garnet and found a goal bouncing around off of a freekick. In the second half, Swarthmore had to save three shots on goal from the Mules and were able to get off nine of their own shots. Unfortunately, none found the back of the net and the game ended in a devastating loss.

Notable Players: Len Yamabe ’27 had five of Garnet’s nine shots. Eli Cogan ’28 had six saves. 

Women’s Soccer

Swarthmore College 0, Johns Hopkins University 1

In a late away game against the No. 8 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, the Garnet lost its first conference game, in a crushing 1-0 match. Under the lights, the match started in an aggressive Hopkins push, with the Blue Jays taking the first six shots of the game. Swarthmore’s four shots in the first half were either collected by the Hopkins keeper or outside the frame. In a close second half, both teams fired shots and held their defensive lines. However, in the 66th minute, the Blue Jays transitioned quickly up the field in response to a Garnet shot. After a misplaced clearance by Swarthmore’s backline, Hopkins found its lone goal, leading 1-0. The Garnet couldn’t find another shot attempt, ending in a tough defeat. 

Notable players: Ava Gizzie ’27, Celia Kanellakos ’28, and Sydney Ross ’28 each had three shot attempts. Lila Travers ’26 made seven saves, steadying the Garnet defensive line throughout the match. 

Swarthmore College 0, Dickinson College 0

In a Saturday noon game in Carlisle, PA, the Garnet drew in a scoreless game against the Dickinson College Red Devils. Swarthmore started strong, creating six corner kick opportunities in the first ten minutes of the game. Unfortunately, none of the attempts were fruitful. Although they led a 11-7 shot attempt advantage, the Garnet couldn’t find the back of the net. Against a high press led the Garnet forwards, the Red Devils did not find another shot attempt after the 55th minute. 

Notable players: Ross led Swarthmore with four shots, three being on target. Travers made three saves.

Field Hockey

Swarthmore College 2, Muhlenberg College 0

In an evening home game at Clothier Field, the Garnet swept the Muhlenberg College Mules in a 2-0 shutout. The opening quarter was a dominant one for Swarthmore, as they prevented Muhlenberg from taking a single shot attempt while scoring their first goal of the match. In the third quarter, the Garnet found their second goal, solidifying their lead 2-0. Their defense proved strong, holding Muhlenberg without a single shot in the last quarter. 

Notable players: Katherine Kohn ’25 put up solid numbers, assisting the first goal and scoring the second. Gabriella Vasquez ’27 scored a goal assisted by Magdelana Jordan ’27. 

Swarthmore College 1, Williams College 3

In a tight battle against No. 3 Williams College, the Swarthmore field hockey team suffered a loss after struggling in the fourth quarter. In the seventh minute of the match, the Ephs scored the opening goal off of a penalty corner. In the second quarter, the Garnet responded with a goal of their own rebounding to a loose shot. Williams outshot Swarthmore 4-0 in the next quarter, but were unable to score. In the 55th minute, the Ephs scored twice despite a strong Swarthmore start to the last stanza. The game ended in a tough defeat for the Garnet. 

Notable players: Sophia Hitchingham ’25 rallied the Garnet with three shots and one goal. Cassandra Conklin ’26 made seven saves. 

Swarthmore College, Franklin and Marshall College

On Wednesday, the Garnet traveled to Lancaster, PA, to play Franklin and Marshall College. The first half was a scoreless battle that ended with Garnet taking only four shots. In the third quarter, Swarthmore rallied on the attack and found one goal by the end of the period. Early in the fourth quarter, the Garnet found a second goal to secure the win and held off the Diplomats’ seven shots in the rest of the quarter, one of which converted to a goal. Despite a late effort, the Garnet were able to keep the Diplomats at bay and ended with another conference win.

Notable players: Kohn had a goal and assisted Emma Duffield ’26.

Volleyball

Swarthmore College 3, DeSales 0

In their match against DeSales University in Center Valley, PA, the Swarthmore Garnet held a clean sweep in a 3-0 win. Swarthmore built and preserved an early lead in the first set, taking the set in a 25-14 domination. The second set saw a more competitive game, the Bulldogs taking a 17-14. However, after the Garnet turned around with a series of continuous points, Swarthmore took the set 25-21. Despite trailing 7-2 in the third set, the Garnet responded with six continuous points to take a 8-7 lead. DeSales took the lead once more before Swarthmore finished the game with a tight 25-23 score. 

Notable players: Match standout and Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week Alexia Enache ’27 had an impressive seventeen kills. Emily Sun ’27 made nineteen assists and Melissa Eyer ’28 made sixteen digs. 

Swarthmore College 3, Gettysburg College 1

On Saturday afternoon, the Garnet solidified their undefeated winning streak in the Centennial Conference, beating the Gettysburg Bullets in an away game. After a first set loss 25-21, Swarthmore responded aggressively in a tight second set. The Bullets led 7-2 early in the set, but the Garnet rallied to take the lead 20-16 and eventually the set 25-21. Swarthmore then took the next two sets in a dominating stretch, taking their fifth conference match win. 

Notable players: Enache led with fifteen kills and Madeline Montgomery ’26 had a solid 25 assists. Eyer made nineteen digs.

Swarthmore College, Muhlenberg College

Swarthmore hosted Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night in a tough battle at Tarble Pavilion. The even match went to four sets with the Garnet capturing the first set 25-17 and then losing the second by the same score. The Garnet narrowly won the third set 25-22 and were able to rally for a 25-23 victory in the fourth set. Although Muhlenburg was able to complete three more service aces than the Garnet, Swarthmore had ten more kills than the Mules. The Garnet put up a great performance and were able to best a team with a record of 17-4.

Notable Players:

Isabel Adam ’28 had an astounding 21 kills while Angelina Heminway ’26 had a respectable thirteen. Madeline Mountcastle ’26 had 28 assists and Eyer had eighteen digs.

The Phoenix
