As the weather at Swarthmore has chilled considerably since the beginning of the fall sports season, the Garnet must turn up their competitive heat.
Field Hockey | Overall: 10-4 | Conference: 6-1
Led by Head Coach Hannah Harris, Swarthmore field hockey continues to rise through the national rankings. Entering the season unranked, the Garnet have quickly cemented themselves as a team worthy of national attention and conference playoffs. After earning 1-0 and 2-1 victories over No. 8-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 19-ranked The College of New Jersey, respectively, Swarthmore broke into the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Top-25 standings. The Garnet climbed to No. 21 after a 3-1 win over No. 12 Ursinus College and a 4-0 shutout against Gettysburg College. A 1-0 effort over No. 8-ranked Johns Hopkins University the following week propelled Swarthmore to No. 18. The Garnet currently stand at No. 16 after 2-0 shutouts against Bryn Mawr College and McDaniel College. Despite a loss to Dickinson this past week, the Garnet remain atop the Centennial Conference standings. They will close out the regular season with games against Washington College, Haverford College, and Franklin & Marshall College on Oct. 24, 28, and 31, respectively.
Men’s Soccer | Overall: 6-7-2 | Conference: 4-3
Swarthmore’s men’s soccer team has shown signs of progress midway through the season. After a challenging start, the Garnet appear to be finding their rhythm under Head Coach Eric Wagner. Between Oct. 3 and 13, Swarthmore built a solid three-game win streak that saw a 4-2 win over McDaniel College, a 4-1 victory against Ursinus, and a 4-1 win against Stevens. After falling to Dickinson, the Garnet turned around against WAC, ending with a dominant 5-0 shutout. The Garnet turn their attention to Gettysburg and Haverford to close out the regular season, looking to build momentum in the final stretch.
Volleyball | Overall: 15-3 | Conference: 6-0
Swarthmore volleyball is on a roll. On Sept. 19, Swarthmore opened its conference season with a 3-1 victory against Dickinson and has remained undefeated in conference ever since. The Garnet followed the win with a seven-match winning streak before falling to William Patterson University. The team quickly bounced back, stringing together another six consecutive victories. One of the season’s most memorable performances came against Hopkins, where the Garnet showed that they can certainly withstand the heat of conference play. After dropping the first two sets, the Garnet rallied to win the match 3-2, completing the reverse sweep and showcasing their resilience under pressure. Led by Head Coach Cecily Tomeo, Swarthmore is currently ranked first in the Centennial standings and is prepared for the four conference matches that remain.
Women’s Soccer | Overall: 9-1-3 | Conference: 5-0-2
Building on last season’s Sweet Sixteen run, the Garnet entered the fall ranked No. 13 by the United Soccer Coaches Division III Preseason Top 25. Falling out of the rankings after the first week, the Garnet quickly proved they belonged among the nation’s best, earning a 1-0 victory over Hopkins to reenter the rankings at No. 21. A hard-fought 1-0 victory against F&M propelled Swarthmore to No. 17, and the team continued its climb to No. 15 and eventually No. 14, as of Oct. 20. Although the Garnet, headed by coach Todd Anktaitis, are currently locked in a three-way tie for second in the conference, the team is no stranger to gritty wins and unconventional paths into playoffs. Swarthmore faces three conference matchups before closing out the regular season and entering tournament play.
