Charlotte Carleton ’27 is a center forward on the women’s soccer team from Bloomfield Hills, MI. After playing the center back position in her first-year fall season, the sophomore has started every game this season so far as a center forward. Carleton currently leads the Garnet in assists and has the second most goals on the team. In the Centennial Conference, Carleton is top six for points (nine) and assists (three). She is also in the top ten for goals and game-winning goals in conference play. This past week, Carleton found the back of the net in the win against Muhlenberg College and the draw against Franklin and Marshall College. The Garnet play next against Christopher Newport University on Oct. 5 at home.

Abby Chang: How did you feel about the tie against Franklin and Marshall this weekend?

Charlotte Carleton: It was definitely disappointing to get a tie after holding a 2-0 lead, but I am proud of how we came out of the gates and it will give us something to fight for next week.

AC: What have been some of the highlights of the season thus far?

CC: The game against Messiah [University] and our preseason trip to upstate NY were a lot of fun; holding off the No. 3 ranked team was an opportunity to prove ourselves early in the season and our trip to Geneva, NY, provided for a great team bonding experience.

AC: What are some team goals for the rest of the season? Personal goals?

CC: Our team goals for this season are winning the Centennial Conference and earning an NCAA bid. My personal goals this season are to continue to adjust to playing a new position and continuing to get one percent better everyday.

AC: Do you have any pre-game or post-game rituals?

CC: Before every game I always have two chicken breasts, a banana, and an LMNT electrolyte packet. After every game I love to get dinner and hang out with my teammates.

AC: Do you have an athlete role model or someone in the sport you look up to?

CC: My favorite professional athlete is Aidan Hutchinson; I respect his relentless work ethic and grit and try to replicate that in my playing style.

AC: Why did you choose Swarthmore? What is your area of study?

CC: I chose Swarthmore because it allows me to continue to play soccer at a high level while still pursuing my academic interests. I am pre-med, planning on double majoring in neuroscience and economics.

AC: What is your favorite class that you’ve taken at Swarthmore?

CC: My favorite class so far has been a medical anthropology class: Culture, Health, and Illness.  It has been super interesting to look at western biomedicine in a different lens and see how much culture impacts medical practices.

AC: Favorite sport besides soccer?

CC: My favorite sport is football; I love the Detroit Lions but I grew up playing club soccer and baseball.
