Baseball
Picking themselves out of a four-game slump, the Swarthmore Baseball team (19-11, 7-4) found themselves back in action with a 6-4 win over Muhlenberg on Tuesday afternoon, outhitting the Mules 14-7.
Trailing 2-1 by the bottom of the third inning, the Garnet scored two runs in the fourth off of RBI’s from Nick Constantino ’14 and Cody Ruben ’14 to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Singles from Joe Rizzo ’15 and Danny McMahon ’15 in the fifth and seventh innings rounded out the Garnet scoring. Despite a late two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning by the Mules, the Garnet were able to maintain the lead with the help of starting pitcher Ramsey Walker ’13.
Notable players: Ramsey Walker ’13 picked up his fifth win of the season, allowing only three earned runs in seven innings. Scoop Ruxin ’15 led the Garnet offense with three hits.
The two teams will meet again for a Centennial Conference rematch on Friday, April 19. First pitch is set to start at 3:30 p.m. at Clothier Field.
Men’s Tennis
Also bouncing back from a recent loss, the Swarthmore Men’s Tennis team (8-7, 4-2) pulled off an impressive 8-1 victory over Gettysburg on Tuesday afternoon.
The Garnet’s loss in No. 2 doubles was the only one of the afternoon, as No. 1 and No. 3 doubles won by narrow margins of 9-7 and 8-5 respectively, and singles play was swept in impressive fashion.
Notable players: Anthony Collard ’14, Malik Mubeen ’13, Irving Stone ’15, and Harrison Lands ’15 all finished as double-winners.
The Garnet will return home this Saturday, April 20, to face Dickinson. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Softball
After dropping their first game 4-3 against Washington College on Tuesday afternoon, the Swarthmore Softball team (18-14, 3-9) managed to capture the second game 4-3 to split the double-header.
In the first game, the Garnet found themselves on the board after an RBI single from Kate Smayda, bringing the score to 2-1 by the bottom of the third inning. After the Shorewomen added another run in the top of the fifth inning, the Garnet began to make a late comeback, scoring off a two-run homer from Suness Jones ’16 in the top of the sixth inning that brought Emma Madarasz ’15 home. However, the Shorewomen were prepared to fight until the end, and sealed the game with a winning sac fly.
Not to be beaten a second time, the Garnet jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring off of a run from Danielle Seltzer ’13 and a double from Rose Pitkin ’14. However, the Shorewomen quickly bounced back with three runs of their own in the second inning, tying the score at 3-3. The stalemate was broken by Samantha Bennett ’13 in the fourth inning, who hit a clutch two-out single to score the last run of the game.
Notable players: Danielle Seltzer ’13 led the Garnet offense with five hits, three of which came in the first game. Sarina Lowe ’14 picked up the win in the second game, allowing only three runs on five hits, and striking out five.
The Garnet will host Haverford this Saturday, April 20, in a classic Centennial Conference matchup. First pitch it set to start at 1:00 p.m. at Clothier Field.
