Softball
Yesterday afternoon, the Swarthmore softball opened Centennial Conference play with a double-header at Muhlenberg College, falling to the Mules 9-2 and 9-3. Their record now stands at 9-5, 0-2.
In both games, the Garnet took 1-0 first-inning leads, but an aggressive Mules lineup were able to rally past the early deficits. In the first game, Kate Smayda ’13 completed the team’s first run after a double from Nicole Aaron ’13 and a groundout from Danielle Seltzer ’13. However, the Mules pulled ahead 2-1 in the fourth, and blew the game open with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.
In the second game, a single from Seltzer once again brought Smayda home to take the early lead, but the Mules quickly followed with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, and extended their lead with three runs in the third and four more combined in the fifth and sixth.
Swarthmore looks to face Cairn University tomorrow at home. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
Baseball
With a 6-4 win against 320 rival Widener University, the Swarthmore baseball team has now boosted their record to 10-6.
The game took a while to take off, remaining scoreless for the first three innings. During the fourth, the Pride took initiative with a 1-0 lead, but the Garnet quickly responded to tie the game with a run by Rory McTear ’13 off a single by Joe Rizzo ’15.
In the fifth, the Garnet widened the lead with four more runs to give them a comfortable 5-1 cushion. However, the Pride rose to the challenge, finishing with two runs in the sixth and an additional run in the seventh to shrink the deficit to 5-4. With a strong pitching effort from Nathan Booth ’16, the Garnet were able to keep the Pride at bay, and score one final run in the bottom of the seventh with a walk by Danny McMahon ’15.
Swarthmore looks to face PSU-Abington this afternoon at 3 p.m., and will open Centennial Conference play this Saturday with a double-header against Dickinson at Clothier Field. Game 1 is set to start at 12:30 p.m., and Game 2 is set to start at 3 p.m.
