The Infinite Playlist: Versatile Valentine’s Mix

February 14, 2013

Editor’s note: This article was initially published in The Daily Gazette, Swarthmore’s online, daily newspaper founded in Fall 1996. As of Fall 2018, the DG has merged with The Phoenix. See the about page to read more about the DG.

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

This holiday is a product of the capitalist system,

So screw this.

Although that maybe or may not be true, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the day. Here is a playlist for all the couples and singles out there. Give these songs a listen! Excuse me while I go to Target to select my favorite tub of ice cream to celebrate the holidays.

For Those In Love:

Sample advertisement

1)     “Love on Top” by Beyonce
Nothing’s perfect, but it’s worth it after fighting through my fears and finally you put me first. Baby it’s you.
It ain’t a holiday without a little Beyonce.

2)     “Down by the Water” by The Drums
If you fall asleep down by the water … Baby, I’ll carry you all the way home
These are the songs that remind you that love can be kind of a beautiful thing.

3)     “Faster” by Matt Nathanson
You’re so delicious, you’re so soft, sweet on the tip of my tongue
Great suggestion from another Swattie! An upbeat song that is not all in a single people’s face that they’re not in a relationship. Sort of.

For Valentine’s Day Breakups (Ouch.):

Anything by Taylor Swift.

The Singles:

4)     “Ridin’ Solo” by Jason Derulo
I’m feeling like a star, you can’t stop my shine. I’m lovin’ cloud nine, my head’s in the sky.
If you learned how to perfect singing your name like Jason Derulo did, why not be single and happy?

5)     “Fell In Love Without You (Acoustic)” by Motion City Soundtrack
Last night I fell in love without you, I waved goodbye to that heart of mine, Beating solo on your lawn.

One of the most romantic single songs out there.

6)     “All By Myself” by Eric Carmen
Alll byyy myselffff…. Don’t wanna be, all by myself anymore

Suggested by another student. Why is this so depressing….?

7)     “At Seventeen” by Janis Ian
The valentines I never knew … at seventeen I learned the truth.
Or watch Liz Lemon’s rendition.

A (Large) Group of Single People:

8)     “Harlem Shake” by Baauer
Duh nananana nanana duhnananana

The Moments You Have with your Sharples Crush:

9)     “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt
I saw your face in a crowded place, and I don’t know what to do, ‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

Here’s what you do. Go up to them and say, “Hi.”
… or not.

And just for kicks….

For the Dirty:

10)“Sure Thing” by Miguel
You be the match, Imma be your fuse, Boom
This guy is so slick. Gotta love the pairs and combinations he throws out there.

11) “Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix)” by Massive Attack (feat. Hope Sandoval)
Oh well, the devil makes us sin … But we like it when we’re spinning in his grip
Brought to you by the group who wrote the opening theme for House, why not give this song a spin.

12) “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me” from Rocky Horror Picture Show
Toucha toucha toucha touch me, I wanna be dirty
Oh my.

  1. I gained a grand total of 1.5 good songs from this list, and the 1 was a student suggestion. This guy doesn’t know a thing about music.

    • Sorry you didn’t find anything you like in this playlist! This one was geared to be more fun. Hopefully you’ll find something you like in the next one since it will be more serious.
