After spending the last week on an eight game road trip in Arizona, the Swarthmore baseball team took the field for the first time at home as they hosted the Immaculata Mighty Macs on Wednesday. But behind aggressive base-running which translated to seven stolen bases, Immaculata spoiled the Garnet’s home opener 9-2 for the first win in Mighty Mac program history.

Since winning their first three games of the season in Arizona, the Garnet have now dropped six games in a row, falling to 3-6 on the young season.

Immaculata jumped on the board first in the top half of the first inning as David News singled and stole two bases before coming around to score giving the Mighty Macs the early lead. But the Garnet would respond quickly in their half of the first as Spencer Ross ’12 drove in Anthony Montalbano ’12 with an RBI single to knot the game at one.

In the top of the second inning, the Macs would take the lead for good, scoring three runs on a bases-loaded hit batter and an ensuing two RBI single off of Garnet Starter Kyle Crawford ’12 (1-1) who took the loss.

The Garnet were unable to respond until they added an unearned run in the seventh inning to make the score 7-2. Swarthmore was held to only six hits on the afternoon.

Highlighting the Garnet’s day on offense was Jimmy Gill ’10, who reached base in all four of his plate appearances. Gill finished 2-2 with a run scored and was hit by two pitches. Ross also added two hits in four at-bats.

The Garnet will return to action on Saturday as they travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to take on the Vassar Brewers in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for noon. Swarthmore returns home on Sunday for a doubleheader with Maine-Presque Island. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30.
