Swat Men’s Basketball Claims Road Victory Over McDaniel 62-51

February 18, 2010

The Swarthmore Garnet men’s basketball team has been plagued by road woes over the past three years, failing to win a single road game in 37 attempts. But for the first time since January 24, 2007 at Washington College, the Garnet claimed victory in a true road game, defeating McDaniel Green Terror 62-51 from Westminster, MD on Wednesday night.

Matt Allen ’10 and Will Gates’ 13 each scored 17 points as the Garnet opened up a double-digit lead in the second half after going into the locker room tied at 26.

It was Allen’s second stellar game against the Green Terror this year. When the two teams last met at Tarble Pavilion on January 27, Allen scored 14 points while holding McDaniel’s second leading scorer, Michael Jarboe, scoreless.

The Garnet received more of the same from Allen on Wednesday as he shot 4-6 from behind the arc while harassing Jarboe all night on the defensive end. Jarboe finished with just six points on 2-7 shooting from the field.

Swarthmore shot a season-high 46.7% from the field including nearly 48% in the first half. Ryan Carmichael ’11 jumped to beat the halftime buzzer that sent the Garnet into the locker-room in a deadlock.

“It gave us a huge boost to go into the locker room tied. We were down by seven at one point in the first half, and to have battled all the way back was a huge momentum shift that allowed us to come out firing in the second half,” Carmichael said, who finished with seven points.

Out of the break, Swarthmore went on a 9-4 run, capped by a three pointer from Carmichael with 16:43 remaining. They would extend the lead to 10 with 6:10 remaining on a three point score from Allen and Swarthmore did not trail for the rest of the game.

The Swarthmore men’s basketball season concludes on Saturday as the Garnet host the rival Haverford Fords on Senior Day from Tarble Pavilion. Swarthmore will be looking to end the season on a three-game-winning-streak as Allen and Danny Walker ’10 will play their final game in a Swarthmore uniform.
