This weekend the college plans to hold a gathering in memory of Tariq Fischer ’08, who lost his life this past summer. Fischer and two of his friends were killed in an automobile accident in July while driving on a highway in Georgia.
Family and friends of Fischer will get together this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Scheuer Room. According to a recent e-mail written by Dean Bob Gross, Fischer’s family would like to hear “Tariq stories,” or in other words, what life was like for Tariq at Swarthmore. Gross also stated that those members of the Swarthmore community that are interested in attending should contact Pat Coyne (pcoyne1) no later than today to RSVP. In addition, Ben Bradlow ’08 has planned a concert to honor Fischer; it will take place at 8:30 p.m. in Olde Club and is open to everyone.
Fischer served as a sports editor for the Phoenix. He frequently attended Garnet sporting events and was an announcer at many Swarthmore home games last year. An article on the Athletics Department Website states, “Swarthmore athletes, parents, students, faculty, staff, and general fans caught on to the enthusiasm in his voice, elevating their cheers with each Garnet score.”
In an e-mail sent this summer, Vice President Maurice Eldridge noted that, Fischer was interning with a newspaper in Augusta Georgia at the time of the accident. The college held a smaller gathering during the summer in memory of Fischer.
According to the Athletics Department Website, donations can be made to the Panacea Fund, c/o The Fischer Family, 764 Eagleton Drive, Martinez, GA 30907 in remembrance of Tariq.
