Dear Friends,

On Wednesday October 8, the Red Cross will collect blood on our campus under
the joint sponsorship of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and the President’s Committee
for the Save a Life Campaign. The supply of blood in our area is dangerously
low. Our potential to help overcome that deficit is wonderfully high. Your individual
donation is very important to people who need blood to support a treatment that
could be life saving. We have set an ambitious goal for this drive, 210 donors.
Please be one of them.

Most healthy people who are at least 17 years-old and weigh 110 pounds or
more are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. You may schedule an appointment
by visiting swarthmore.givesblood.org or by e-mailing Alfonso Silva ’04 (DU’s
Community Service Representative). You may also be in touch with me with any
questions or to volunteer your assistance in making this effort a success. For
questions regarding medical criteria, please be in touch with Linda Echols at
lechols1@swarthmore.edu.

Today we announce our plan to join in the Red Cross’ Save a Life Campaign.
We will be in touch again with reminders and further details. Web site registration
will also generate reminders and allow us to plan efficiently and minimize your
waiting time.

Competing at the University of Maryland this past weekend, the debate team
finished impressively in the standings against such schools as Princeton, Johns
Hopkins, NYU, Columbia, and George Washington. The team of Sonya Hoo ’05 and
Aviva Aron-Dine ’05 placed 5th overall, while Hoo was the 7th overall individual
speaker. The team of Emily Tredeau ’06 and Alex Braunstein ’06 also competed,
with Braunstein placing second among the novice speakers.

* Insider U.S. officials stated Wednesday that the U.S. has still not found
any of the banned weapons Iraq is accused of storing. According to a draft of
the interim report on the search, no illicit weapons have been found in Iraq
by the American team. The team is led by David Kay, a former United Nations
weapons inspector. However, according to the New York Times, the team has found
“precursors and dual-use equipment” that could potentially be used
to produce biological and chemical weapons. As evidenced by a press statement
on Monday, the White House still believes that Saddam Hussein has not destroyed
all his weapons of mass destruction.

* A surprise tornado tore through parts of western and northern New Jersey,
northwestern Connecticut, New York, and the Philadelphia area on Tuesday. The
tornado came on the tail of Hurricane Isabel, which had an anticlimactic showing
in the area. However, the tornado did cause a disruption, causing many residents
to lose power. Damage also included fallen trees and wires, damaged houses,
and blown-off roofs. The tornado was classified as category F-1, which is the
lowest category and indicates winds from 73 to 112 miles per hour.

* The makers of Kazaa, the popular file-sharing software, filed suit against
several entertainment companies on Wednesday. Sharman Networks Ltd., whose main
offices are in Australia, is suing for copyright infringement. They claim that
the companies violated Kazaa’s terms of service by utilizing unauthorized copies
of Kazaa in their efforts to search for users illegally downloading copyrighted
music files. In a New York Times quote, the Recording Industry Association of
America found Sharman’s “newfound admiration for the importance of copyright
law” to be “self-serving and ironic.”

hosted by Small Craft Warnings. A night of candlelight, cushions, cheese and
chocolate…what more can you ask for? Come share your or others’ work over
great food with cool and cozy people. Let your inspirational juices run wild;
we’ll even supply the paper and crayons, a few first-liners for poems and word
games to get your mind going. Bring your writing, bring your friends, and get
ready for a fun, mellow back slide into the weekend! If you know that you definitely
want to read, let us know and we’ll sign you up (email amy at along1). It’s
open-mic of course, but we’d love a few brave people to start the evening off.

Hear our panelists speak and talk about their experiences with diversity at
Swarthmore – and what didn’t get said in the workshops. Everyone is invited;
freshmen are especially welcome and there will be free pizza. The Ring facilitates
student discussions on issues of importance to the Swarthmore community throughout
the year.
